Hi Everyone! I had my first dose of IV Abraxane on Wednesday, 80mg, and for the most part so far so good. I've been told the fatigue, hair loss and neuropathy take a few weeks to kick in. The only noticeable side effect so far is that everything tastes strange and my mouth feels kind of fuzzy. No sores yet but I'd love to hear your suggestions on how to prevent/treat mouth crud and sores. Thanks!

Favorite remedy for chemo-induced mouth sores?
Hi there
I’ve just started Afinitor in January and mouth sores are one of the most common side effects
I’m a retired dentist but not really knowledgeable about drug related sores
Anyway I chatted to a mate who’s an oral surgeon and he recommended ‘Mucosamin’ ...it’s brilliant...I’ve had only one small lesion which cleared up quickly...I’ve told my oncologist to let other patients know ( she’d never heard of it!!)
You can order from Amazon...not cheap but lasts ages as you only need a small amount...it’s quite viscous
Another tip is to rinse with Curasept...this contains chlorhexidine which is bactericidal so you don’t need to be harsh with your toothbrushing which can be painful if you have a sore mouth
I do hope this helps
Barb xx
Thanks Barb! I just ordered it from Amazon...UK! They don't sell it here in the U.S. So it may take a few weeks to get but I'll be glad to have it. I've been swishing with a salt/baking soda mixture for now. I don't have mouth sores yet, fingers crossed. But man, where did my taste buds disappear to??
When I had mouth sores the pharmacist mixed up "Magic Mouthwash." I couldn't remember all the ingredients and apparently they differ somewhat, but here's what I found for you:
Magic mouthwash doesn't have a standard formula, but it usually contains at least three of these basic ingredients:
An antihistamine or anticholinergic agent, which may help relieve pain
A local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort
An antacid that helps ensure the other ingredients adequately coat the inside of your mouth
An antifungal to reduce fungal growth
A corticosteroid to treat inflammation
An antibiotic to kill bacteria around the sore
Most formulations of magic mouthwash are intended to be used every four to six hours, and to be held in your mouth for one to two minutes before being either spit out or swallowed. It's recommended that you don't eat or drink for 30 minutes after using magic mouthwash so that the medicine has time to produce an effect.
I think mine had lidocaine, bendryl and an antacid. Best of luck to you.
I've heard that abraxane doesn't have as harsh side effects as taxol, so I hope that's the case with you. Lynn
Thanks Lynn, I'll ask for some of this! I'm happy to be on Abraxane instead of Taxol too; no need to take the steroids, Benadryl or solvent to get it in, and it went in easily through a vein so maybe I won't need a port for a while. I have heard that neuropathy can be worse with Abraxane but I'm trying to stay ahead of that with acupuncture and L-Glutamate.
And now, time for another nap!
Hi!
I was given magic moth wash when early on using ibrance 125 mg, I had the worst sore throat. Nothing over the counter or gargling etc would help, this had lidocaine in it abd nit sure what else. I only needed to use it once and the sure throat was gone.
For sores on my tongue and mouth I’m usually helped by a mix of salt, baking soda and warm water.
All best!

Major mouth wash numbs inside of mouth. Ask Dr for it
Thanks, I'll ask my Dr. about it!
