Is anybody experiencing painful neuropathy in their ankle? My ankle has been hurting while walking but is terrible at night when I lay down and move my leg. My family doc suggested sciatic nerve but it is only my ankle. They pain takes my breath away. I have been using an amitripilyne/ketamine cream that is helping. Seeing my oncologist in the 15th and curious if this is just me. I had Mets to numerous bones and just had hip replacement surgery due to the Mets. The pain is on the same leg as the hip replacement. Thanks.

Hi Sarcie,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing painful neuropathy in your ankle. I have never had it in my ankle, but I have had neuropathy in both feet, which went away, and I get it from time to time in my hands. Judging by what you say, it does sound like it could be linked to the sciatic nerve or linked to your hip replacement. I would let your oncologist know what's going on and hopefully something can be done to ease the pain. If there is one thing I have learned through all of this is this: we shouldn't have to suffer. There is always something that can be done whether it's palliative radiotherapy, physiotherapy, medication, or even surgery.

I have a damaged sciatic nerve and when I have pain, it isn't in my back closest to the nerve, but in my lower leg, ankle or foot. It makes sense to me for you to see the surgeon who did the surgery on your hip. My sciatic nerve was not damaged by bone mets in that area but by a displaced vertebrae and a delay in surgery as my pcp and onc recommended physical therapy and the damage became permanent. So I'd call that surgeon ASAP and ask for an appt this week. The damaged nerve has been more disabling for me than the cancer has been!

Thank you. It all started after surgery when I was given the ok to drive (which meant I was moving more ). It is painful and that is after I have taken my normal pain meds.

Hello Sarcie:

I experienced pain in my right ankle on Sunday. I was driving and this excruciating Pain shot thru my ankle. I had to pull over and take 2 Motrin until the pain stopped. It was very scary. I have never experienced that type of pain on my journey. I am taking taxol for my ascites. I have about 3 more weeks of taxol then the PET scan.

Stay strong you are blessed!

Your pain sounds like mine. I hope your PET scan has good results.

Thank you. What did you take for the pain?

in reply toRomieRom

I took a breakthrough hydromorphone that I have. I am taking a slow release hydromorphone and Vimovo which has naproxen in it. I have tried a topical rub but it didn’t help. It worries me that it hurts like this even though I am already taking pain meds.

Thank you for the info. I hope you feel better soon. I am sorry to hear that you are in pain now. I really understand how you feel. The pain is so intense. Can you try Motrin? Your meds seem to be stronger than Motrin. I am soooo tired of this journey!

in reply toRomieRom

My meds are much stronger than Motrin. I can’t take Motrin with the vimovo. I understand your being tired. Some days I just want to stay in bed.
