Mirena coil and side effects

I've had the mirena coil fitted for just over a month and I've been suffering a bit with it. I have been experiencing quite severe cramping pretty much since I had it fitted and I have been taking naproxen and codine, as these are the only painkillers that work for me. I have also been spotting since a week after I had it fitted. During the past week I have also noticed that it has drastically altered my mood. I have become very irritable and my mood changes a lot, which is something my partner has also noticed. It also seems to have decreased my sex drive.

Before this, I tried the copper coil, and this worked out fine for about 6 months. However, it started to cause me really bad pain and the bleeding was getting too heavy for me, so I decided to have it removed. Before that I was on several different pills over the course of two years and all of these seemed to impact my mood and sex drive.

Would anyone be able to tell me if the effects the mirena coil is having on me will settle down at all or is this what it is going to be like? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am struggling quite a lot and I don't really know where to turn with birth control if this doesn't work out for me.

Thank you :)

Thank you for the link, it had some helpful info!

And yeah my body doesn’t seem to agree with the hormones. I thought that the Mireya coil would be alright because the hormones are quite localised in the uterus area, but apparently my body doesn’t feel the same way!

I am only 18 as well, which I don’t think I mentioned in my original post, so unfortunately that isn’t an option for me at this moment in time. Thank you though! X

The "Billings method " of fertility awareness has up to a 24% failure rate see here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compa... and is comparable to the male partner withdrawing before climax - which also has a high failure rate. I would not be advising an 18 year old at peak fertility to use this method, unless they were prepared for the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy.
