hey guys

I recently had my annual exam and the doctor finally sent a biopsy in to be tested. it turned out to be cancer. so he is setting me up with a dermatologist and he told me that it happens to be a female. the site itself will require a bit more digging etc. but my wonder and frankly worry is will she want to go into the full body exam, and if so do they use an extra person in the room to watch? I am not sure I could allow that, in fact I am pretty sure I couldn't allow that. not from a male or female but especally from a female I am not wanting a female in general so thinking about just cancelling the whole idea. any way if anyone has experience I could use some help here. talk about crawling up your butt with a microscope!

You’re the one who decides how exposed you want to be . Most dermatologists never request you to remove your underwear. If you have an issue in that region then it would make sense. I have been to several dermatology appointments and have never been asked to remove my underwear. If that happens just flat out refuse

I personally only see male doctors because of past humiliation caused by females treating me with disrespect in regards to exposing my genitals unnecessarily. I reserve that right to my wife only

You should be able to request a male dermatologist if it’s a personal area

Yes, I'd request a male dermatologist if it was a sensitive area (you don't say). For what it's worth I would prefer to have a woman rather than a man check out my meat and two veg.If it's not then I can't see them wanting to check you out head to toe.

Just because your dermatologist made a referral to an opposite gender surgeon doesn’t mean you have to use her. Consider telling his office you’re not comfortable with the referral and will only go to a male surgeon. If they won’t help, use the Internet to find a male surgeon. Regardless who you end up with don’t consent to anything other than the surgery. If the doctor is rabid about more intrusive exams just refuse, don’t undress and that will be the end. When I have gone to skin screenings I tell him it’s above the waist only because he always has a female office assistant present. It’s ridiculous, unprofessional and inconsiderate.

Good luck getting rid of the cancer.

I go to a female dermatologist and have no issues at all. She asks if I want to be checked under my underwear and is completely professional about the entire exam. I'm sure she has seen many male parts over the years so mine is nothing special. Having had three squamous cell cancers removed I want someone who knows exactly what they are looking for checking out every inch of my body. Oddly, she found no additional squamous cell cancers but noted that my face was covered with pre-cancer cells - my own GP dismissed this as overly dry facial skin. Glad I went to see her and will return each year.

I get a full body exam twice a year, my underwear stays on. My dermatologist is a female.

You are the one paying for this, so you tell the Doctor what you want examined! There will probably be a scribe accompanying the Doctor to take notes. If she wants to do a full body exam, you keep your underwear on. If you have a concern in the groin area, you ask the scribe directly "would you mind turning your back for a minute." This has worked for me in the past. There is no reason she can't take her notes with her back turned for one minute!! There is no reason for her to sit there and embarrass you by staring at your genitals!! Always remember, you are in charge of what you want done!!

I choose to go to a male dermatologist. He does have a scribe in the room with him who is always a young female. On the visits that I need him to look at personal areas, I tell him we need to be alone. He asks the scribe to go outside, and she comes back in when we ate done. It is completely up to you and you don’t have to have anyone in the room that you are not comfortable with.

Entirely upto you. Your body your choice. You can ask for a Male Dr and/or a male chaperone.

Personally, when I was being examined for possible Penile cancer I had gone past the point of caring. For me, more important things where at stake and I figured they knew what they where doing, Male or Female.

Just say you prefer a Male to do the exam'. It would be considered a bit weird if you actually asked for a Female !

I will share that i made it through to the dermatologist though I will have to go back that exam will not be as difficult. there was no chaperone and it worked out OK but I will say I was so stressed and nervous that i scratched in my sleep and i think that made her a bit nervous as well. not sure it was as thorough as it might have been. still that works for me. the cancer was very obvious so she would have seen any other one no matter. I have to say jaglad I feel for you. I managed this but i seriously doubt I could have made it through that. at least not until I had some extra suspicions

Thank you for that Omniscient. I hope that I will have opportunity withing the year to find a male to handle the body search. I didnt think this would work out and I had the creeps for days after. I will go back and handle the cancer but I doubt I will ever see her again after that.
