Has anyone had experience of this antihistamine?

Hiya all.

As a support for getting to sleep when my PLMD is problematic , (rather than using Zopiclone), my GP has suggested Promethazine. aka Avomine, Phenergan, or Sominex.

Has anyone had any experience of this, or does anyone have any insights?

Thanks for your thoughts.

One rule of thumb is to avoid the drowsy making ones.If they warn you not to drive machinery, then that is a "trigger" already!☠️

It is a sedating antihistamine and will make RLS worse for most.

Sadly your GP is wrong. Sedating anti histamines like phenergan will trigger/worsen RLS.But as UK GPs aren't taught the basics of RLS, he won't know that. Use this opportunity to educate your doctor. Show him the RLS-UK website and the list of medications to avoid.

Medical cannabis will help with sleep and might reduce your PLMD.

But medications might be needed. Just make sure you refuse ALL dopamine agonists (Ropinirole, Pramipexole, Rotigotine patch). Pregabalin or gabapentin (at the correct dose and time) are now first line meds under the new UK NICE cks guidance.

🫣I had the smallest dose possible of phenergan & one of my worst nights ever with restless legs.

I'm afraid I cheat, I also have Bi-polar and these meds knock me out. Before this diagnosis I was taking Temazipan successfully for 5 years without increasing dosage. Good luck

I’ve been using chlorphenamine - cheap and works well. I think it is the ingredient of Piriton. I also take 4 melatonin capsules. Avoid diet drinks because they keep you awake.

Melatonin can make RLS and PLMD worse for many.

You are lucky because chlorphenamine make RLS worse for most.

I must be the odd one out. I take promethazine at night to counteract the itchiness from (I think) buprenorphine. It helps with sleep and doesn’t seem to trigger RLS!

If you're talking about "Diphenhydramine," I have. It gave me the worst night of my life. Restless whole body.

Hi, when I went to see a neurologist consultant about RLS he said to not take antihistamines because it makes RLS worse. Being a bee keeper, I have to take an antihistamine when I get stung. Don't know what to do for the best at times.
