Tens machine

Has anybody used a tens machine for rls? I couldn’t sleep last night due to rls and even though they say not to use it, I put my tens machine on timer and it did hell a lot.

I’ve been using it for years to help with pains in my legs, but started using it when I’m watching telly as It helps with the aching sensations in my legs from the rls.

Hi gnome12, I’m really glad that there’s some relief out there other than taking meds, even if it’s temporary. Pleased to hear that it works for you.

Lots of people report that a tens machine helps and one of the world experts in RLS treatment, Dr. Buchfuhrer, puts a lot of store in counter-stimulation devices.

Thanks for reply involuntary dancer. I wonder why a tens machine isn’t advertised for rls. It provides a diversionary tactic even for a short time.

Where do you apply the stimulation? On the legs somewhere? The back?

I’ve had a deep aching at the back of my knees for years, so generally, I put one pad slightly down onto the calf just below the knee and the other on the opposite side of the thighs. That seems to work when my legs are aching, but sometimes it’s my back that’s aching so just put the pads either side of the painful area. Hope that helps.

Thanks Creepylegs! I was just looking at some googled images of where to put the tens for RLS and I happened across this picture of the sciatic nerve and something clicked. When we were young and terribly in love, my husband used to massage my back during a RLS event. He would hit this magic spot that would instantly stop the heebeejeebies. For the rest of the night! Never could figure out why. But this picture shows the sciatic nerve running very close to where that magic spot was....I wonder what would happen if I put a tens there?

The circle I drew is the general area of the "magic spot"
