Cpap for sleep apnea

My mum has rls and has been on lots of medicine to control it. It work until augmentation but this time gabapentin was not working. However at the same time she had her results from her sleep test and was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea and the hospital gave her a cpap machine. The doctor said it should help with her restless legs too. I can say her rls hasn't completely gone, but has reduced and she is not on any medication for rls. It is early days but she is feeling better. She has the occasional offset but is managing to sleep better.

I saw asleep clinic when I was trying to get an iron infusion and they tried to sell me a CPAP machine. I was surprised to find out that there is a relationship between sleep Apnea and RLS. In the end I was forced to find somewhere else for the iron infusion and the result of the sleep study indicated my apnea was only mild. They still gave me the impression that they were trying to sell me a CPAP whether I needed it or not. I think they have a conflict of interest if they are conducting sleep studies and selling the CPAP machines.

Incidentally my brother cured his sleep apnea totally by losing 20 kg

We didn't have to buy the cpap machine it was given by nhs. Mum still occasionally has restless legs and/or itching but very reduced compared yo before cpap.

Hi Bejwo50

How is your mum getting on? Last I read she was much improved by using a CPAP machine and had given up the drugs altogether. Has she stayed good?

After approx 2 months, her rls returned. She tried taking the gabapentin but that didn't help at all. Another few months of agony. She couldn't use the cpap cos of rls. Another trip to the dr. He prescribed pregabalin after a few days to settle things were looking better. Hospital prescribed iron tablets too. Mum then had knee replacement surgery and all rls returned. 2 months later things got better. Yes mum is taking meds (pregabalin 150mg at night) and she is using cpap. Some not so good nights but most nights are well.
