Had blood tests after a couple of weeks without supplements.

Results - Magnesium 0.83. Gp says should be over 0.7 so that's OK. Vit D 79.8. GP says should be over 50 so that's OK.

Ferritin is 95. GP says should be over 50, the neurologist at RLS AGM says over 70 so that seems fine. I know there are some on this forum who think it should be higher. This time last year my ferritin was 113 so it has dropped but that is probably because I had stopped taking the Spatone.

I haven't yet resumed taking supplements. Any views?

Hi, Lois Tonya, I wrote a post within the last month about how blood magnesium levels can be within the normal range yet magnesium still being deficient in the body' Also, it might be helpful to google on magnesium deficiency and blood work results. During one hospitalization, I had to have IV magnesium even though my bloodwork came back normal. I was in for a-fib (a cardiac problem) but magnesium deficiencies are more common than we realize and can be overlooked. My approach would be to do my research, then speak to my doctor if I felt perhaps there was more to the problem. Might be worth looking into. It's not for me to give medical advice but when I got more magnesium I felt better in several ways. Just a suggestion. There is also some great info on the net about ferritin levels and rls. What I discovered -first from reading some posts here and then by googling is that sometimes people with rls do better with a higher ferritin level. I spoke to my sleep doctor (he is the one that first suggested checking ferritin.) Mine came back 60 and we are now working on getting it higher than that. The key is going to your docs armed with info.. It helps me not be dismissed when decisions are made about treatment. Just a suggestion. Good luck finding more solutions for your rls. Take care, Burma

Glad my post helped. I believe-from what I've read and seen with patients- that magnesium deficiency is very underrated by our healthcare system. (In the US at least). There are better tests than just the regular blood test. I guess we have to wait til insurance decides to reimburse for other tests. (But that's a subject for another day!LOL). One group that is really on top of it are cardiologists which is a good source of info for me. But other specialists sometimes need to be prodded by their patients to scratch the surface about deficiencies when the routine lab work comes back 'normal'. For now, in my opinion, rls patients are often. the main 'first-reponders' for rls info .P.S. A little humor: "Normal is a setting on a washing machine." Good luck with your search. Take care, Burma (burmag)

Hi Burmag,

I've got as far as buying some 90% cocoa chocolate. That, on it's own, hasn't helped - here I am at 4.30 in the morning responding to you! Tomorrow I'll go in search of magnesium spray or lotion

Hi LoisTonya. I love the magnesium spray but I'd like to share something before you buy. It can be EXPENSIVE and many people, including myself, make their own. It's simple and cheap. The recipe is on many websites and is basically the same. Why not try googling magnesium oil recipes before buying and see what you think? It's called magnesium oil but it has no oil in it and you do spray it on. I got my recipe from a website that I use as a 'go-to'source for other things. It's a place to start. It's called wellnessmama.com I have no vested interest nor do I make money for sharing this info. So feel free to look around. I make mine in about 4 cup batches because it keeps and I make batches of things when possible to save time. Also, you know what's in your own product. No preservatives or other unknown ingredients. Hope this helps. Take care, Burma (burmag)

95 for a ferritin level is not that bad, i know it seems now over 100+ is supposed to be better. When your ferritin level was 113 did you find it made any difference to your RLS, does the 95 make any difference to your RLS. Was it any better. does it seem worse now its at 95..? If either of those levels didnt help your RLS, then ferritin is not the reason for your RLS.

Hi Elisse, No I haven't noticed any difference in my rls over the last few years. I'm looking into magnesium now.

As burmag has said, the common blood magnesium test doesn't always give the whole story as the body has a mechanism to maintain magnesium levels in the blood by stealing it from the cells. Ask for the RBC test if you've had the common serum test. mymagnesiumdeficiency.info/...
