A number of years ago I read an article from I think the Mayo Clinic in which patients with RLS were given codeine..tThe conclusion reached was that RLS sufferers did not become addicted due to the opiate pathway. Incidentally someone mentioned an Amish potion it is called Yoders--- anything is worth a try.

Codeine works very well for RLS imo.

People who are medicating a physical condition with a drug and only a physical condition, (if a person notices that the drug helps dull difficult emotions such as anxiety and starts using it for that then they could well find themselves in bother), then the chances of addiction are slim.

Part of the reticence of prescribing by Dr's is in part to indiscriminate prescribing in the past and part because of the inane drug laws.

And you are quite right anything is worth a try.

Retren, I'd like to hear more about codine not becoming addictive. Was the dosage small enough to not become dependent? Vicodin is a codine based medicine and we hear about celeberties becoming addicted to ''pain pills''. Are not most ''pain pills'' codine based?

I can,t remember it was 20 0r so years ago. I my-self took it (combination)with Tylenol until I thought the Tylenol would eventually give problems. Whenever I would visit my mama in England I would stock up as it could be bought over the counter.Does that still hold?Anyway I have never had a problem and it would always work for me and the dose did not change. Are they perhaps 5 mgm.Forgive me for being a bit fuzzy I have had so many different things since my heart attack it is a problem remembering dosages.I have no doubt that paper I quoted would be on line as it was a bonanza Fidel published medical research paper. I will try and find it if possible .I may still have it. Retren.

I have been taking Percocet which has codeine for about 10 or 12 years for my rls. I take a 5 mg. tablet and cut it in half, taking 1/2 around 7PM the second half around 8or 9PM then a third half around ten PM. Sometimes I have to take another half but rarely. I have to say when I get up in the morning I do not crave the Percocet. Rather I am happy if I got a good nights sleep. For the most of the time it works. Over the years I have tried klonopin, sinimet, and Mirapex. The Mirapex was the last one I took and coming down off it was hell. I took the new drug Horizant, but I became so depressed that I had to get off it and it didn't do a thing. The Percocet is the only thing I am on. I does give me relief. And I am not addicted except that I take it for the RLS symptoms.

My doctor is afraid the state will revoke his licenses to prescribe class two drugs if he gives too much to too many patients. he trusts me to not abuse the drugs containing codine . sometimes I run out before the drugstore will fill a new prescription for vicodin and it is really tough to get thru two or three days without it. I hav arthritis in my joints, fibromylgia in my muscles and RLS which affects my entire being.

Anything to relieve it is not of limits. I was on the edge of disappearing when I first saw him. It is not a good way to live but it is the hand I was dealt and I must play it out.

It appears that everyone has a different reaction to all these medications. So frustrating there is not a universal treatment for this stressful condition.Retren.

5 of May to Hidden .My list of medications seem endless it's a wonderI don,t rattle. Pal is toprol, calcium, aspirin, carbamazepine, lyrica, plavix, tramadol. They have all been switched around except heart medication  and a number eliminated because of side effects and inefficient.I forgot to mention B12.Why do these posts seem out of sequence?

I take B12 on a regular basis just because I am short of it but it doesn't help with the restless legs.

Kirkwall 5July.I have had pa for many years stopped taking B12for about 3years as I was told had a build up and did not need it.I started getting symptoms again and re-commenced B12.but I never had any remission from the RLS which started when I was 10 years old.I am now nearly 80 and it is nearly 24/7 Until recently.I have been using the Relaxis pad.It seems to be giving some relief ,have now been using it for a few weeks in conjunction with tramadol and lyrica. The medication I have not needed as much since using the pad.although there have been a couple of times when there has seemed to be a rebound affect.,but will keep persevering.hope this is helpful.I know there are a few others using this pad. but don,t know how they are progressing.

I recently was taking a lot of Gaviscon as a new med was causing me stomach issues. What I learned is that both antacids and antihistamines can exacerbate RLS. Good to know.
