Constipation.

I just wondered whether it is normal to suffer from constipation after giving up smoking? I am eating plenty of fruit and fibre. I wondered whether it was the body adjusting to not having the many toxins that cigarettes contain.

Thanks Madimad. :)

Hi Poland, join the club. I'm suffering off and on too. Smoking increases the metabolism. Every time you have a cigarette your heart rate goes up. When you stop smoking your metabolism slows down. Your metabolism controls all your bodily functions including how fast it breaks down food, waste etc. Its not an abnormal rate but its one that you're not used to so I suppose everything else has to set itself up in a new routine. This is why when I cut down first before I gave up I hung on to that first cigarette in a morning, even when I was smoking normally that first cigarette in a morning almost acted as a signal and within an hour I would usually be going to the loo. Now as I knew would happen my whole system seems to be a little bit "hey, what do I do now" sort of thing.

There are some powdered drinks called Fybogel. They are very gentle, even with one in a morning and one in the evening it will still take time for them to work so they're not horrible like laxatives normally are. You can get them on prescription and I think you can buy them over the counter, they even used to sell them on ebay, don't know if they still do. They are a very orange flavour and have lot of 'bits' in, you just mix the powder with some cold water and drink them, hold your nose if you don't like the bits, they don't bother me.

Hi I find the following very good to get your system in good working order. I use one teaspoon of cinnamon powder with two dessertspoons of honey and add to cup of boiled water. Take first thing in the morning or last thing at night. It works a treat. Try it and see for yourself.X
