New to stopping

1st step today, I haven’t actually stopped but this is the 1st time I am going to properly try. After numerous warnings from the dentist I’m laying in bed unable to sleep due to gum/tooth pain. I’ve already lost 1 tooth but I suppose I didn’t have the pain associated with it previously & as it was a back 1 it didn’t really make me want to stop but to lose anymore especially where it doesn’t seem like there is any options well.....I’m probably going to find this really difficult after about 30yrs of smoking, I know it is for everyone I guess that it’s just I don’t really want to stop. Can any one recommend what methods they have used? I don’t think patches or gum will work, has anyone used the tablets? I don’t think I want to start vaping as I still think it has an effect on oral health but am also going to struggle with the habit of smoking & don’t know of any other alternatives I am also going to find it hard in social/work environment (dealing with stress) how do you stop when you don’t really want to? 😞

Everyone is different on what method they use to quit, what works for one doesnt always work for another. We do have lots of members who have had tablets, some backthem up with gum or lozenges.

I personally used an inhalator ,Basically a plastic tube with a cartridge of a small amount of nicotine. There is no vapour with these. and I gradually cut down to zero cartridge.

Morning Shadow. The key to a successful quit is really, really wanting it but it sounds to me that you’re really not so sure. As though you’ve been backed into a corner because of the toll smoking’s taken on your teeth & gums? It’s as though you’re not in a position of choice and have no say. BUT YOU DO!! Try to reframe this as a bit of a wake up call that you’ve been so so lucky to have picked up! Using statements like; ‘I don’t really want to stop’ and ‘I’m probably going to find his really difficult’ and ‘I am going to find this really hard’, well, guess what, you’re absolutely right!! Sooooo, try coming at it in a more positive frame of mind using positive declarations like ‘I really want to stop now and the benefits to me will be .......... (fill in the blanks here-safeguarding the rest of your gnashers would be one I guess!). ‘I’m going to find the best thing for me to help me quit to make it as easy as possible’ (things are only as complicated as we make them) and ‘I am going to be so pleasantly surprised as to how easy it is to quit smoking’ because Shadow, you have all the help, advice, guidance and support right here at your fingertips. Fast forward to a year down the line and visualise how your life will look.....do you want to lose yet more teeth and go through all the agony of extractions, implants, plates and wires or do you want to come out of this wonderful position of choice smelling so beautifully sweet! Life after smoking is like being reborn....welcome to the rest of your sweet smelling life! We are so here for you. Much love Poll x

Oh yes I know all about gum disease unfortunately and my advice would be to stop smoking before you loose any more teeth. That probably sounds harsh but it’s true.

Lots of good advice already so I’ll just say you could try the inhalator as this gives you the hand to mouth action. I didn’t really want to stop smoking either but with the help of this terrific community, I did it. You can too👍🏼

Sounds familiar Shadow75.

I definitely had no intention of stopping, mainly because at 61 years old I figured it was too late and that I’d rather die happy with a smoke in my hand than miserable and clean.

To go from 30-40 a day to nothing seemed pretty impossible to me. I’d also do the classic thing of listing all my non-smoking friends who had already died and smugly say ‘Look at me...’.

So I definitely didn’t ‘want’ to stop smoking, but eventually all the health scares made me think just maybe it could be for the better.

To begin with I stuck patches on my arms and this definitely helped me with the initial withdrawal effects. After about 4 weeks I got bored of them and went cold turkey. It’s now been 8+ weeks and I am just starting to feel that I may have cracked it a day at a time.

Some pretty grim side effects came and went and currently I am concerned with COPD, but all in all I am really happy I made this decision and add to that the response from my family and it’s really a no-brainer.

Give it a go mate and this group will give you loads of good advice and support throughout the process.

Best Christmas present ever.
