Hi everyone, found you by accident on looking up insomnia when quitting smoking. I am on day 7 using patches and a very occasional spray. Having real problems with sleep, not helped by husband being a heavy snorer! I feel tired but when I get to bed I just can't drop off and when I do it is only for a short time. How long does this phase last for?

Hi LawnRanger :-)

Welcome to Quit Support, our online stop smoking community.

Having disturbed sleep patterns is common during the early days of stopping smoking. It's funny really - sometimes you feel as though you can't get off to sleep then when you eventually do, you wake up thinking you have had a great nights sleep. You then you look at the clock to find you've only been asleep for an hour! Then it happens all over again!

Don't worry though as this won't last and is at it's most common during the first week. Hopefully from this point onwards you will start to find yourself falling back into your old routine.

There are a few suggestions of what you can do to help you drop off. Click on the following link and have a read of 'Breathing Exercise 3' - A breathing exercise to help with a good nights sleep;

If possible, you could try doing some exercise during the day which may help. Try not to drink any drinks that contain caffeine before going to bed as this will only stimulate your mind.

Keep on keeping on as you are heading in the right direction :-)

If you let me know when your quit date was, I'll add you name to our Wall of Winners - the place where every quitter is a winner :-)

HI, quit date was 19th november this year. Excercise comes with the job, I am a self-employed gardener, so lots of fresh air too. I have cut out coffee altogether at home for the last week as it was half of my cigarette duo and replaced it with water.Thanks for the suggestions, will be looking into them.

Aup LawnRanger, just love the name :D :D

I was a gardener a few years ago, so I know your getting the exercise :o erm, am just wondering which patches you are using ?? I ask you this, cos I found that the 24 hour patches didnt suit me ! as in not sleeping very well. So I got some of the 16 hour patches and tried them, you wear them during the day and take them off at night, they seamed to be much better, and i get a good nights sleep :)

Just a thought, Pete :)

I have the 16 hr patches........don't know how or if I should admit to this.......I have been wearing them overnight as well...yes I am blonde! In my defence patches used in the past (years ago) were 24hr. Guess it would help if I took notice and read the enclosed leaflet. However, if I had not posted this I would have been oblivious...will be removing patch before bedtime!
