We have just returned from a holiday in Malaysia and Singapore. My husband for awhile now has wanted to return to where he was born in Malaysia and where he had worked in Singapore. We both knew that if we didn't do it now, it would probably be very difficult for him later. I have to admitted it was with trepidation I started to arrange the holiday.
We planned the dates for when our daughter could come with us as I felt with two of us to help we could probably manage on a day by day basis.
When booking flights and hotels I requested assistance and a room with facilities for disabled people. I have to say from the moment of reaching our local airport the service we received was excellent from the airlines, ground staff, taxi drivers and hotel staff.
My husband's brother lives in Malaysia, and he and his wife (a nurse) offered to have him for a few nights in order to give my daughter and myself some rest at night. This for me was one of the best parts of the holiday. (I haven't had a break for the last 2 years from being his main carere day and night) sadly on the morning we were due to move on, he decided to get himself up with no assistance, fell and sustained a broken nose, skull and a horrible laceration above his right eye. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance. Here again he received excellent care, but he had to be admitted for a short stay. Thankfully the fractures were stable and well aligned and he appeared to have no other effects from the fall so he was discharged. We changed our travel plans to allow a few more days rest in the hotel where my daughter and I had been staying. The staff at the hotel can only be described as amazing in the care and support they provided.
Sadly my husband has deteriorated further, however, the whole experience and expense has been worthwhile. On one of the few occasions he started a conversation with me, he said he did appreciate the holiday and was pleased we went.
If any of you are planning a long haul holiday I would certainly recommend Malaysia and Singapore as places to visit. Both, but in particular Singapore have very good facilities for people with disabilities.
Love to you all battling the challenges of PSP day to day.
