Covid vaccination is DANGEROUS for Neurological conditions? That's what I read, but I can't find the source! Can anyone tell me more, please?

Thanks Timbow

There isn't enough information to know this yet. What you may have seen is that the Oxford trial of a vaccine was paused because someone had unusual neurological symptoms. But that was decided to be probably unrelated to the vaccine. There's a lot we don't know about COVID yet never mind the vaccine. Depending on how effective any of the vaccines turn out will affect the balance of decision for anyone since obviously getting COVID is also DANGEROUS to someone with a neurological condition who is at high risk of pneumonia with any respiratory problem.

Thanks Messier. Yep, I saw that Oxford trial death, but separately I also found neurology research work which indicated a specific link. Will keep looking! Cheers TimbowPSP

There are dozens of COVID-19 vaccines in development using different approaches and so we don’t yet know which one(s) will be used. The vaccine(s) that become available will have specific labeling approved by your national authority (MHRA, FDA, EMA etc) as to who should get it and who should not get it, and a list of potential side effects seen in testing (some of which may not be related to vaccine). The side effects that are known will also change with new data after widespread use.

Then you and your doctor will be able to discuss whether it is appropriate for you and whether you want to have it.

In all clinical trials of vaccines and drugs, people get various illnesses as could happen in their usual lives, and it can sometimes be hard to sort out what was related to vaccine and what was not, so it takes widespread testing and use to gather lots of data to sort out that question. You are hearing about neurological conditions in the studies because when those happen no matter how rare, they are always concerning and worth stopping a study to assess. If you don’t want to be within the first 100K people vaccinated in your country then you can always wait after the first million or 4 million or whatever number makes you feel more comfortable, until there is a more solid understanding of how people are reacting and how well the vaccine is working. Not to worry for now! Avoid potential exposures, wear a mask in public, wash your hands, and be safe.

That is a really helpful and good answer! It echoes my daughter earlier who said: "No worries Dad, vaccines are not and have never been mandatory in the UK. But Australia? ... they always have been mandatory there ..... all countries have their own systems. Don't concern urself with something that's not real!"

Thanks again! Timbow

Timbow,

I agree with the assessments of the Messier and Martina. It is too soon to know if the vaccines that will be available will have any negative side effects for people with Parkinson-isms. I would also add that, in the latter stages of CBD, PSP, et al., respiratory illness becomes the gravest threat to most people with these diseases, and Aspiration Pneumonia is probably the biggest cause for fatalities. When Covid becomes acute, respiratory disease seems to be its worst symptom, so I am guessing we will all need to discuss vaccination with our Neurologists and our GPs.

I suspect there will be several vaccines in a year or so, and some may be neurologically worse than others, and some may have no neurological side effects whatsover. But given the risks of Aspiration Pneumonia and respiratory issues in folks with Parkinsonisms, I believe we all need to have a discussion with MDs to determine if we and the people we are taking care should get vaccinated. My best guess is that the rewards of being vaccinated against Covid may outweigh the risks the vaccine may bring.

Welcome to the group! The people here are awesome and there are NO stupid questions here.

Warm Regards,

Dick

Much appreciated Dick. I am keeping an eye on all the developments, and not going into 'panic mode', well certainly not yet. I still have too much to live for! Cheers .... Timbow
