He is gone...

Sometime over night my beloved husband slipped from his frail body to a better place where he would not fall, could speak clearly once again, and his body regained his strength and vigor. I am heartbroken. I knew the end was near, but I didn't think it was today. When I woke, I couldn't believe he was gone, but our hospice nurse, my sister an a good neighbor mobilized to get me through the shock. For the first time in years, I am sitting here alone. I knew that would come, and I imagine what it would feel like, but this is a whole different kind of empty.

So sorry for the loss of your dear husband and the emptiness you now feel. Just remember he will always be in your heart and that he is now whole again in a better place, afterall it's what he deserves after such a devastating illness.

Take care of you now and deal with one day at a time.

Sending lots of love,

I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved husband, especially in the time of Covid when you might be isolated from the social support that people want to give.

Thank you for being open and sharing your experiences in your recent posts. It is very helpful to those of us who may be approaching advanced stage with our loved ones.

Sending you lots of love - the journey of grief is a hard one, take your time, take each day at a time and just do what you want to do. You will smile and laugh again even though at this moment in time you probably feel that you never will. Try and focus on the good memories - nobody can take your memories away. Thinking of you.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. What a great photo to post, though! You look so united and bonded in love.

My husband is failing at the moment after major surgery. I'm not sure if he will pull through, as he is so weak.

Whatever happens, I know that the love will continue, as I am sure it is with you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Much love

My heart goes out to you. How grateful he must be that he was beside you when he left and not alone. I quite understand how you feel about him not having a body that gave up on him. When my husband died in 2018 I wrote the poem below. I hope that it will give you comfort. My love goes out to you now as you start a completely different phase of your life. Love and hug AliBee.

Apologies to anyone who has read it before but it just seems appropriate.

His wicked sense of humour

will have now come to the fore

His love of birds and insects

will have now returned once more.

His ability to answer each and every quiz

will once more be in place,

and his laughing eyes and lovely smile

will now be on his face.

He is no longer crippled

by his horrible disease.

His legs will now obey him

so he can Morris dance with ease.

His voice and speech are better

so he can raise his voice in glee.

He can sing and laugh with angels

as his spirit is now free.

We cannot help but miss him

and feel sad that he has gone,

but we can’t be sad he’s been released

from his body which went wrong.

He did believe in heaven

and life beyond the grave,

so let’s give thanks we knew him

and thanks we know he’s safe.

I’m so very sorry. Once in awhile my mind does go to “ trying on” this unimaginable aloneness and it’s unfathomable. Others completely understand. Wishing you peace.

Baytalon profile image
Baytalon in reply to Aurala

Aurala, I, too, would sit quietly some evenings, after Steve went to sleep, and would "try on" the loneliness. When he was first diagnosed, I would collapse in my fear, uncertain of how I would ever bear it. In the past few months, as the reality drew near, the feeling brought sorrow and defeat. Now, I know the grief, but after the rush of tears comes a small smile as I make myself remember that he is free, this cursed disease has no hold on him anymore, he has found his peace.

I am very sorry to hear of your husband's passing. I hope the memory of happier times fill your heart and mind to help get you through the lonely periods. As you say, he is walking, talking, and being in a far better place and at last free of this horrible disease. The grief, unfortunately, is now ours alone. God Bless.

He's in peace now, free of that burden, free from that sick body, he's at a better place, relived, be strong, you should know he's no more suffering, & you should be proud of yourself being there all along that miserable journey, Life is made to be endured, we're all battling the same demons, until we're free from our defective bodies (mentally & physically)...
