She has completed her 6th, and last, round of chemo. While her blood marker dropped dramatically it's nowhere near what would be a remission. We found out at beginning of January she definitely has dementia and periphal neuropathy. Chemo makes both of those conditions worse so oncologist isn't recommending any more. That being said surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue can't be done because procedure is to start chemo within 4 weeks of surgery. Statistically doing surgery without the chemo shortens life span. The oncologist has basically moved her from treatment stage to palliative care stage.
We've already started setting things up, experience is helping! Adjustable bed, hand held shower, grab bars, toilet seat riser, shower chair, lift chair, bedside table, etc all in place.
Since this is my MIL there are certain aspects of her care I choose not to get involved with. My wife has stated she is not sure she'll be able to handle someone in near/at 100% dependency knowing what I did for dad. After talking to MIL applications to nursing home facilities are in place.
