Hospice-ask your doctor and look into it.

Our neurologist recommended hospice for my husband in dec 2018. My father was dying and put off until now. We met, he was approved and I can’t tell you how helpful after one visit -all within an hour and a half. His lift recliner had broken, we got a new one this afternoon. He will get a hospital bed within 4 hours of when I say go as I have to remove the other bed. Depends, wipes, drugs, weekly visits with showers are all included free. This is not even considering the emotional, spiritual assistance. Music therapy, massage therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy (swallowing) all included. Plus a 24x7 call line.

Generally you have to be within 6 months of passing but that is not an absolute. It can be extended. As times get more trying I believe they are present more.

I am in the US. This is an amazing gift provided by Medicare.

Don’t do as I did and hesitate, just find out if it is a possibility. Kurt, my husband is in memory care unit which is great but this will be extra special in caring for him.

We are in the USA. Our doctor isn’t willing to sign off on it yet. She’s sticking to the 6 months to live. I think Larry has another year in him. That is unless he doesn’t. I did start palliative to hospice care two weeks ago. Fired the agency this past Friday. After a rocky start the first week they didn’t show up this week. Am moving on to another care agency this coming week. Hope the new one demonstrates reliability.

I thought I would be calling hospice and they would do their own evaluation. Drs. are weird. Yours must have missed that 30 second lecture.

I am well aware of weird doctors. They sure aren’t anything like TV in real life. I’ve been wary of medicine for the last couple of decades with the screw ups I personally experienced.

I echo your sentiments. I had a very similar pleasing experience with hospice for my dad. They were not familiar with PSP but after a little research said “it’s a terminal illness and it is nearly impossible to predict how much time is left, he qualifies.” (He was in mid to late stage) Within first week had new mattress and a Cadillac of a wheelchair. They were especially helpful in the end doing the advocating for him so we could focus on loving him. He was on hospice for 5 months before he passed. I highly recommend for our U.S. friends.
