Itching on the head

LuisRodicioRodicio profile image

For a few days we have seen the appearance of itching on the head that have not improved much trying different types of shampoos.

The products that are used for itching in non-hairy body parts such as calamine-based products (Talquistina) are difficult to apply as they are in the form of cream or powder

Is there someone who can help me answer these questions ?:

a) Is this a symptom of PSP?

b) Have you successfully experienced any shampoo, lotion or treatment to overcome itching on the scalp?

Many thanks in advance.

Regrads.

Luis

Enjuagar.

Suerte, abrazo

Elena

Luis,

This is not related to PSP but it maybe of help. My daughter has been prescribed Loprox Shampoo (Generic Name: ciclopirox shampoo) for itchy scalp (caused by eczema) and its worked well for her. She has been using it for several years successfully. She has recently been switched to Ketoconazole Shampoo 2% which she has not yet started using so I don't have any feedback on that.

I think the itching is a symptom of PSP. I see other posts with itching complaints. My dad occasionally complains about itching on the scalp or that there is a hole in his head.

Hi Luis,

We didn't experience this, but I see a post from 3 years ago titled "Itching" that shares a few suggestions....

Good luck!

John used to be always scratching his head but that phase has now passed so maybe it is a symptom. X

Please, a question:

The period "scratching the head", when it appeared after the first symptoms of PSP?

Thank you in advance.

Difficult to say Luis. Perhaps about a year after he was diagnosed ( three years ago ) and it is only when you did this post that I realised he does not do it any more. Maybe because his arms are always rigid across his chest these days and his arm muscles are really too stiff to raise his arms above. Pauline x

I think it is maybe a symptom as Steve spends ages rubbing his hand through his hair as though it is irritating him but it is really short so maybe it is his head itching. PSP is such a mystery with so many weird little symptoms alongside the awful big symptoms.

Robert started scratching his head a few days ago. He had a small area that seemed to be worrying him. He scratched and picked at it and there is now a big patch of red, raw skin. He is in a care home and they are treating it. I've cut his nails very short so it is difficult for him to cause further harm. I am assuming it's yet another strange symptom of PSP.

Thank you Lynne.

Simple and good idea: to cut the nails.

Hi Luis,

My B has a habit of scratching his head particularly when sleepy or agitated. I’ve looked at his scalp BUT there are no rashes there. So, it appears it is symptom of PSP.

However, I’ve changed his shampoo to a baby shampoo, just in case it really is itchy.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck,

Mx

Dear Luis

I think it is PSP!! My husband scratches his scalp and any other scab or graze he can reach. He takes a non drowsy daily antihistamine plus a Piriton tablet at night when really itchy. We use Bettamouse a steroid cream on the affected areas and try to alternate shampoos. But if I am honest nothing works for long but he sometimes gets a couple of days at a time when a new shampoo helps briefly.

If you find anything which helps do let us know.

Love Tippy

Thanks a lot Tippy for this interesting information.

I will keep all of you informed about our experiences.

Hugs.

Luis

Dear all!

FYI

From 50 days ago and to wash the hair we are using a glycerin-based emulsion called "Seba med" from the firm "Sebapharma" (Germany) which so far works very well.

We wash her head 1 or 2 times a week.

Hugs and luck.

My husband also has itchy flaky skin. We were told it is a commom in Parkinsons patients. It is severe, on his face, behind his ears, etc. I bought a scalp massager for shampooing his hair from Amazon. Teamed with a medicated shampoo , it is wonderful.

It is round, with a handle and rubber nubs to clean and massage the scalp.

Thank you Karynleitner!

My late husband had something like a thick sticky dandruff on his head , face, ear, even eyelashes and he kept scratching his head till it bled sometimes. I took him to a dermatologist and was told it was Seborrhoic dermatitis. Got prescription cream ( Econazole Nitrate Cream )and samples of Neutrogena T-Sal shampoo. I shaved his head which made it easier to rub the cream on his head. Those dandruff were so sticky, couldn't see under the hair. Poor guy, I even had to scraped the dandruff softly with my fingernails because just rubbing with a cotton ball or cloth won't come out.
