Council tax discounts

Yesterday I received a nice letter from the council to say that our council tax has been reduced by 25% back dated to 2013. I had applied months ago on the grounds of severe mental impairment and was told it wouldn't be backdated. (It was)If you haven't claimed it is worth looking at your council's website. There is also a good series of posts on this site from two years ago . Good luck.

Yes we got this too! Well worth doing! And it’s easy, ring the council ask for the mental impairment form to be sent to gp, gp signs returns to council, bingo, discount applied and can be backdated x

Yes, we got the discount and I even applied for the discount from our previous local authority where we used to live because my husband was mentally impaired back then.

The only thing is, my daughter has moved back in with us for a while and so now I have to pay what I was paying before, minus the discount for my husband's wheelchair.

The reason is, that because my husband was disregarded for council tax I therefore, was being charged as a single person occupancy, now that my daughter is living here, it is no longer classed as a single person occupancy dwelling.

I have the same problem - 2 adult children 18 and 20 - who just won't flee the nest despite all the encouragement I can give! So no case for single occupancy.

If there are just the two of,you in the house and one has PSP, then you can get careers discount equivalent to the single persons discount. When I moved David in with me to care for him, I mentioned Imwas effectively a full time carer when I updated the council tax office and they sent a one page form to fill in, and aim,eat my single person discount, albeit renamed as careers discount.

That is the same here. What they don't allow is for a spouse to claim carers discount. So even though I am a carer 24/7 when I married her I promised to love her in sickness and in health till death do us part.

Unfortunately, things may vary from council to council? or just Scotland is different? Aberdeen City Council means test this.

Just want to thank you for your post. I had no idea this benefit existed until I read your post. I looked into it, filled in the form, got the Doctor to sign it (they didn't even charge), sent it off and today Mum received a full refund of 3 years of Council Tax and no ongoing bills. After care this has been Mum's biggest bill, so will make a real difference to her finances. Thank you so much. Alison

Brilliant! When we received it I thought, I can't just keep this to myself, there are people who are entitled to it and need it. Hope this makes life much smoother for your mum. Best wishes to you both. Ken.
