Good afternoon & what a sunny one it is!
I have been looking at a couple of nursing homes (forward planning, hoping I won't need one for my Dad). I asked at one the cost and she said around £1,000. I'm at home now wondering....Did she mean a week or a month! Silly question maybe but can anyone she'd light on it please?
Per week. My darling never went into a home but the CHC were paying £1500 per week to the care company for night care, putting to bed and getting up. The agency wanted to send 2 carers but I refused as I was able to be the 2nd carer. Goodness knows how much it would have cost with 2 of them.

Gosh it's huge isn't it!! My dad is self funding but he wouldn't be for long at those costs!
We have two . They won't agree for me to be the second one even though I do it the other 22 hrs a day . Only time it really needs two s when I have my sitter. .
I have at last gad the yearly assessment . They are adkinging for a third day sit and 6 hrs each time not three hrs .
Possibly a night sit . Not holding my breath

Normally meds have advers effects if r him but so far that s sent so . I am even abasing a little easier.
I don't know how long this period will add but we gave beenbthrough so much , so many blips I call them when he can go OFF ,, FOR TEN DAYS AT A TIME .. THEN SUDDENLY SWITCH BACK ON . . SO UNPREDUCTABLE . .I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YR TRAVELS Bev . Jeep doing what u r doing . X
I'm assuming that was for seven nights Bev . I am having my very first night sit tonight ..she came at ten. Leave at seven am to go to her first call Coming back with a second second carer at eight am for an hour . Then sit for six hours ..
I don't know how much that will cost the CHC .
Did CHC tell you the cost Bev ..I didn't ask
Hello there. I am afraid the cost must be £1000 per week - what a shock it is. I looked at a few NHS homes for respite for my husband and wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Lucky we had the money at the time and after looking around, found they varied from £900 to £1,500 per week quite unbelievable. My husband also hated being there as most were dimentia sufferers, but it did me a power of good to get a life for a few weeks. Best wishes for the future.
These places are more money oriented than caring I really don,t know what constitutes such a high price. x

If he has to pay this amount he may be better off having additional care in his own home as I'm there most of the time.

As everyone agrees nursing care is usually in order of £850 to £1500+ per week depending on which part of UK you are in. Best thing to do is find one where you both get good vibes do not hesitate to discuss with DN/GP for their recommendations as it will save looking at the wrong sort (you do not want EMI or residential homes as they do not have the facilities for looking after PSP). Also start applying for CHC as they will cover the cost of either home care or nursing home.

I agree with Tim, ideally the nursing home will be well managed, will not have too many dementia patients and preferably will have some experience of PSP.
Not all nursing homes are bad. Not all PSP patients are better off at home (unless you can afford, and have space, for a team of live-in carers such that two can be on duty at all times).
A nursing home is not an easy option as you will want/need to be there A LOT to make sure the care is good and you are part of the team. You will need to build a good relationship with everyone there especially the manager.
CHC WILL fund a good nursing home when you get to the stage that you need one.
