Curcumin and CoQ10

My husband has PSP and is taking the drugs sinemet CR, Apo-levocarb, gabapentin, tyrazodone and magnesium glycinate. Is it safe to take curcumin and CoQ10 along with these drugs?

Thats quite a mixture of licenced medicines. The general advice is to get a medical opinion before starting complimentary therapies. COQ10 has both positive and negative double blind clinical trials supporting its use in PSP. In one trial quite high oral tablet doses were tolerated by PSP patients without adverse effects. As for circumin, I always hesitate when advising on a herbal remedy. I have seen both positive trials for herbal medicines but also evidence of adverse effects, herbal remedies should be considered a mixture of chemicals some helpful, some not, but some could adverese effects. I worked as principal toxicologist in UK before retiring to look after my wife. Best wishes jmbb

This is the reason I have not jumped on board with giving my husband all the herbal remedies. I believe in them, but am scared to mix whit what he is taking now.

I know what you mean and I am scared to mix them too. Just wish there was more positive things we could do. He hates taking all the medication he is on.

Its a really good point. My wife takes over 30 medications a day, many we know are doing something useful, the exception being LDOPA where we are not convinced. There seems to be very few positive things to do against, PSP, just battle away at the symptoms as they come.

May I ask what your is wife taking that you know is useful? Nothing that was prescribed helped my guy, except perhaps the selegiline, which he has been on for a year. He has a very uncomplicated regime now, and the lack of medication is itself a mercy - it's less for us to worry about. But if there were something we should inquire about that might help...

Oh dear, I'm sorry you and your wife have so much to deal with. I keep thinking that a psp diagnosis is quite enough for anyone, and we should get a pass on everything else. It doesn't work that way, does it? on we go. All the best, Easterncedar

Thanks, best wishes Jmbb. we have done well to keep out of the hospital for 7 weeks now.

The CoQ10 was well tolerated, but expensive to buy. More research and value might be proved. Best wishes
