My Father in Law had a fall while in respite care and has fractured his right elbow! he is due home next friday. Any hints and tips on getting him into the car feeding using urine bottle etc. I am worried that my 79 year old Mother in law will not be able to cope....

Hi Capsey,

Sorry to hear of your Father-in-law's fall and injury. Does your Mother-in-law have any carers to assist her in looking after him? If not it may be worth asking the respite home to consider organising this before sending him home. This doesn't have to be a permanent arrangement if they don't want it to be but might prove useful while his arm heals.

Is his arm in a cast?

The best way to assist him into a car is to get him to turn his back to the car and put his bottom onto the seat first and then swing both legs in afterwards. You may find that 2 carrier bags (one on top of the other) will make the "pivot" in with his legs a bit easier.

For feeding I would suggest cutting food into small bite size pieces that he can eat with a spoon.

Wearing jogging pants ( or similar style elasticated waist trousers) can make it easier to access and use a urine bottle, especially if he would consider wearing them without underwear temporarily!

Hope some of this is useful!

Love
