Found out that 20 week developmental scan was not carried out

I’m 37 +6 days pregnant and I have just had a phone call from the hospital who have just admitted that when I had a scan at 20 weeks the sonographer didn’t carry out the appropriate measurements and that I just had a cervical scan....

They were really apologetic and the case has been taken up by the trust and now when I have my baby delivered by c section next week that a paediatrician will be carrying out tests on him...

I’ve had quite a few growth scans carried out every 4 weeks throughout the pregnancy so I’m hoping something would of been picked up?

As looking through my notes in the scans it says heart seen, kidneys seen etc but no measurements taken.

I’m now really worried, that he’s going to have something wrong with hi,, but then I’m thinking even if they had done the scan correctly what could they do about it?

That's terrible that the sonographer didn't do that. That's their job!! But as you say there's not much you can do now.

I think complications are quite rare. As in most babies born are born with everything ok. It just means your little one might be whisked off for examination upon delivery. Try not to let is stress you out now. I hope everything is ok.

You should definitely raise this once your baby is born. Put an official complaint in..I mean isn't that half of what the 20 week ultrasound is about!? Checking everything is there and taking measurements.

Thank you for your reply, from the sounds of it, it sounds as though the consultant just put cervical scan down at the 20 week appt so that’s all the sonographer did, I did have another scan appt two days after that they cancelled which she presumes should of been the developmental scan....

I bet everything is fine and I would say that they must be being overly cautious now and wanting to treat you with extra care because they failed to do those earlier checks. I'm sure everything will be fine, but I agree that you should follow that up after your baby has been born.

Oh bless you I bet that came as an unexpected shock. But you’re right... what could they have done anyway. It’s good your baba has been growing fine. Hope you can relax during your final week before meeting your baba xxx
