It’s a profile of Hiyori Kon, a 20-year-old sumo wrestler who’s one of a small, but growing number of women pursuing the brutal, but strangely elegant sport. She faces not only her opponents in the ring, but centuries of exclusionary tradition established by men. ❤️

I get that women can be great players such as softball, volleyball, la crosse and etc and etc. I like how women want to compete against men. It will only make them better players if they aren't already better than most men. Take boxing for example, men shoukd not box against women. That'd be brutal.

I dislike boxing..period. Isn't it "amusing" that if you do it in the ring, you get paid...if you do it out on the street, it is called assault and you can be arrested?

You're right there about the assault versus getting paid. It is kind of strange people paying to watch other people smack each other around. Boxing is very dangerous. People have died from participating in that "sport".

If you look at most national sport such as American Football, it is so violent that most of its gestures can only be simulated in practice. Yet this is the point of games, of sports—they take the place of riskier activities, even if, like capoeira, they prepare the players themselves for violent, or potentially violent engagement. 🤷‍♀️

I think about pro wrestling and mma. Women are already a big part of that and have found much success. Rhonda Rousey is one of the big names that come to mind. From judo, to mma, to wwe, she went through it all. Before, no one really took women wrestling that seriously; it was always seen as an after thought compared to the men's, but times have changed

Very True when we take this type of sport in America. Sumo is a class act sport in Japan and that’s a man’s world. Culture wise, women over there are still taken backseat to this sport. The peak for women in sumo is 25 and for men is 30. If you watch the document, you will see how it is a hard world to get your feet in. However, it’s very inspiring that Hiroyi kon so passionate and assertive in making it☝️❤️. I agree with all those sports you mentioned, however i am not too sure about WWE, there’s the Bella Twins I watch just for entertainment 🤷‍♀️🤣😂🤣😂.

They've been done with wrestling for a long time. Now we have legit female wrestlers and fighters that complete against one another and it's incredible to watch.

I'm not familiar at all with the sumo wrestling scene in Japan. But it does sound like it would be very hard for women to break through in that kind of sport long dominated by men

Sumo is a prestige class martial art in Japan for men. He is extremely respected by society. Professional sumo wrestling has a strict hierarchy based on sporting merit. It separates and gives top status to any man from the rest of any profession in society.

I understand that in the western world. This is in Japan with its culture. It’s an example how women with great determination to get into the men world sumo martial art. 🙏

I understand back then women were discriminated for sure. Now, we are all raising our awareness and thrive 👍🙏

Yes my dad when diivorced never cooked he would eat a dinner every day at his local cafe and buy a take away sandwhich well I mean 🤔my step dad however his wife was so lazy he was a real gent did the shopping and he loved cooking but his birthsine was cancer there home makers he was brought up in the country he would never let me buy my own drinks when out but neither would my dad my dad went mad when at a wedding doo I bought my own drink he insisted on paying for the taxi too

A meditative quote that I liked was when Hyori Kon said, "Once the match begins I have no thoughts". It reminds of Bruce Lee at the beginning of "Enter the Dragon". Lee says, "I dont hit the opponent, it hits all by itself". Anyways this is a great story about a women fighting against male chauvinist traditions in modern day Japan. Women in Japanese society are taught to not stand out and walk behind the man. Hyori is not afraid to challenge these attitudes and break through them. She is not afraid to stand alone🙏🏻👍❤

She also revealed many flaws in Japanese culture that preferring women who are demure and subservient. Society is dead when there’s no radical change in women equality. Osho yet very enlightened with this issue, he recognized the woman role in our existence. 🙏

Sumo wrestling really does require some strategy, but the word elegant does not come to mind. If females chose to pursue sumo wrestling, they should compete against other females, not males. Japanese males have traditional codes on touching women, which gives females an unfair advantage. " Watch the hands buster". :)

If we think sumo wrestler like Fat Basturd in Austin Power, then definitely it is not elegant. 🤣😂 It’s a traditional martial art that has to be conducted in the most prestige manner. It’s consider as the fight between the gods. The sumo ring has to go through a purification ritual by sprinkling salt on the dohyo. Both fighters wear their customary deadpan expression and go to their respective corners and drink the chikaramizu, the power water, and wipe their mouths with the chikaragami, the power paper. When they squat and clap their hands showing empty palms to signify they are not carrying any weapons, raising their right legs as high n stomping twice to ward off evil spirits. One encounter won’t last for more than 18 seconds because it requires sheer energy of push opponents out of the ring with straight torso and lunges. Each movement is symbolic of honor spirit. We think they are obese but there’s a difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat and they can go back to being in shape at any point. For profession women sumo, they do compete against each other but their cut off age is 21 while for men is 30; that is the irrational sexism coming in. Just like Sushi, it’s sashimi with the precise cut and presentation, not tempura and chicken teriyaki. 🤣😂😅👍
