I have a fascination with the Welsh coastline, and Harlech castle (and the town below it) fill me with a kind of awe-struck wonder.
This is watercolour 300 mm by 145 mm, Payne's grey, salt and white oil pastel. I had oodles of fun painting it.

Hi Jerry. The sky I did by painting a wash of tea-strength Payne's grey (it was still quite dark), and then, while it was still damp, dribbling drops of fresh water onto those areas where the paper had wrinkled into ridges. The water spreads out, wanting to be level, and pushes the paint ahead of it. It is an effect I use in almost all my paintings. I have little control over the end result, but love it.
Beautiful and very atmospheric! I have visited Harlech many times and I too have a fascination for the Welsh coastline. Thank you for sharing.
I've never visited the great castles of Wales, and would like to visit Harlech castle, the picture looks good, a silhouette of the castle against a backdrop of snowy mountains. Can imagine seeing that and the tune of Men of Harlech playing the background.
Hello, Just found your email, and Harlech, is such a fond memory for me, after the war things were so much in shortage, including money. My parents were into camping, we went to North Wales at least twice and camped. We climbed all the steps to the Castle. We spent time on the beach, it was so empty, we climbed the sand hills. It is a Very Fond Memory for me, especially as I now live in the USA. No castles here, I am from Lincolnshire, I loved Lincoln, its cathedral and castle. So much history in England. When I went to Harlech I was about 8 or 10, I have a scar on one knee from when I fell on a newly paved road (they used small rocks back then), the farmers wife put home made butter on it, lots of salt, did I yell?!!** So thank You Again. What a delightful reply, Sprinkle1. I am from Yorkshire, but visited Lincoln and its cathedral as a child. I also have a photograph of my sister and me standing on a step at the front of Harlech Castle. I think I would have been about five, she seven. She is wearing a Welsh hat. I am pleased to say that those are becoming popular again in West Wales, where I now live, especially on St. David's Day. I hope you are managing to stay safe.
