Wonderful Responses to my issue with LONELINESS

Winterwonderland profile image

A few days ago I posted on this site for the first time about suffering from loneliness while living with and caring for my 96 year old Father. I wanted to thank everyone for all the responses sent to me. I felt/feel so supported and my spirits were lifted! And because I know there are so many wonderful people in this group that I can reach out to, I have to say my sense of Loneliness has eased a bit. I’m so grateful!

I couldn't agree with you more that this is a wonderful group to be a part of. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Winterwonderland, I'm so pleased that this has helped you, and now that you are here, the best way to feel less lonely is to join in with us all and share how you are getting on, and almost anything else which makes you feel better. Take care of yourself and your elderly dad and come back often!👍

What a beautiful name

As I previously said there are many on this site who will show you warmth and understanding

Better than some of my relatives who live in U.K.

Kindness and compassion can only come from someone who cares and is understanding

I have even understood that many of my family never cared for me that is why they have been harsh to me in the past

But here strangely enough I realise there are kind and caring people and it is question of always trying

Even though you may feel alone there will always be some one here to listen so no more loneliness

You are so right! This is a wonderful group of people who are always willing to listen and support you. It’s also a great place to find things that cheer you up on a gray day.

This site has been a godsend to me too....learned about it last week and joined on Monday. I think it is especially important as we try to navigate a pandemic on top of everything else we normally deal with. May you have a good day!

Winterwonderland ...

I'm so pleased you feel less alone now you have found this community. The PWB family is inclusive and welcoming and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I discovered Health Unlocked a year and a half ago and PWB early this year.

Finding this forum has felt like coming home: it is peopled by members with hearts of gold.

In all honesty, it wasn't loneliness that brought me here: I was looking for answers to a series of medical issues and frustrating symptoms, and stumbled upon PWB quite by chance.

I never left!

Like you, I am a carer to an elderly parent - my 95-year-old mother, who moved in with us ten years ago when she was unable to manage on her own any more and had become prone to falling over. We were referred to the Falls Team who carried out a home assessment and signposted us to the council for care package consideration.

Being home-based work-wise, I was able to look after Mum through the day as well, although I will admit work did suffer at times. That just meant I had to put in longer hours than might otherwise have been the case.

In recent times, my ill health has meant that I am unable to do as much as I used to for Mum and I lean more heavily on the care companies entrusted with catering to her hygiene needs and heavy lifting, etc.

I'm not sure where you live, but I hope you have a carer support organisation to which you can turn for assistance. I heard about such an organisation local to me three years ago and have been recognised and supported by the unit since that time, receiving a card that is topped up with a tiny, non-taxable financial award every month (I call it my treat card, as it is valid in restaurants and cafes - but not pubs!) and which entitles me to modest discounts in multiple shops. But what is more important is the knowledge that I can call the charity team at any time for emotional or practical support.

The government occasionally realises that unpaid carers are accorded scant recognition for the work that they carry out, and we hear and read vague stirrings in the media, but little is actually done, so it falls to charities such as these to cater to the unpaid carer community.

I hope, very much, that you continue to derive solace from this community - and that you enjoy posting here!

Hello TheDrivenSnow,

Your Mother is lucky to have you as her caregiver. It must be very difficult for you though on days when you are working, caring for your Mom and you’re not feeling well! I live in the U.S. and unfortunately getting health care aids into the home can be very expensive. Sometimes our Medicaid programs can help with the costs but it’s usually not for a long time. It seems that the trend here is for the elderly to stay in their homes for as long as possible. But sometimes that is not possible and they have to go live with an adult daughter or son. The least desirable situation is to go to a nursing home but sometimes it is not possible for an adult daughter, son or relative to take in their Mother or Father or both, in some cases. As I watch my Father try to get around, he uses a walkerI can’t help and think “growing old is not for the faint of heart! It’s too bad that people have to suffer like that. Luckily, my Father does not have any illnesses and takes no medications, which for 96 is pretty unbelievable!

I very much enjoy posting here and I have already found much comfort. Thank you!
