A bit down

Just feeling more down than usual. Found out my little kitty has the beginnings of kidney failure. She’s never been a healthy cat with lots of digestive issues as well as behavior issues. She is completely terrified of going to the vet and goes into hysterics if she even thinks I might be taking her. She’s hiding under a table right now and can’t decide where I’m going and if she’s included. (I’m going to work). It’s so hard to keep level with everything and now this. I live alone and it’s doubly hard for me. I’m not doing great myself but trying to keep going. Just needed to unload a bit I hope you all understand.

So sorry. Have you tried Rescue Remedy for visits to the vet? It used to work on my dog.

Sending you both a gentle hug. 🌸

Thank you for the hug. I’ve used rescue remedy for mild fear but she needs way stronger stuff for the vet!

I understand how you feel. Finding out that a pet is sick is very hard particularly when they are your sole companion. It's the not being able to explain to them what's going on and that anything you do is trying to help them. My cats are terrified of the vet too and I get myself into a right state before taking them!

One of my cats was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease four years ago at the age of 8. She takes medication everyday and eats a prescription diet. She's still doing really well and you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with her.

So obviously I don't know the exact circumstances with your cat but CKD cats can live a happy and full life.

Thinking of you.

What medicine does she take? I’m trying to get mine to eat the prescription food but it’s super hard as she also has ibs.

She takes Fortekor which must taste nice because she paws at my hand and eats it from the palm of my hand without any problem!

She has Royal Canin Renal Chicken wet food and Royal Canin Special Renal dry food. I tried Hills but she wouldn't eat that.

I started by adding a small amount of the Royal Canin wet food to her usual wet food (Felix) and over a long time increased the amount of Royal Canin until she was used to it. It took a very long time and a lot of tears from me when I felt like I was starving her.

I read up about other people's experiences and many said the same. The advice from others and my vet was that it's far more important for them to eat something even if it's not the renal food as losing weight is not good for them and will hasten their decline.

So I relaxed and didn't stress if she wasn't exclusively eating renal food. She now eats about 80% renal and 20% Felix. I still mix the two together and she occasionally steals food from her sister's bowl! And we still give her small amounts of cooked meat/fish.

I decided it is all about quality of life. What was the point in making her unhappy and stressed by eating food that she didn't like? I'd rather her enjoy her food and life even if ultimately her life might be a little shorter as a result.

It's incredibly stressful taking her twice a year for check ups but once she's home from the vet she has forgotten all about it.

I hope this has helped a bit. Please feel free to message me if you want to ask me anything else.

Hello so sorry about your cat, it is very common cats are very vigilant and cope better than us,there is special food you can get on prescription low sodium diet, they get very thirsty, but it depends what stage it is and what your vet says you can get a telephone appointment or after lockdown have a home visit but are expensive, as with prescription food, you could make her feel better with something nice like white fish or chicken breast with water in depends on her digestion,my pixie is allergic some cat tinned, canned fish is too salty And them biscuits will make your cat thirstier, get her a nice safe bed and snuggle cover and cat nip toy. And sorry you are feeling sad your cat will sleep when your out so try not to worry too much and when your home you can get cosy together hugs from me and pixie 🌟🐆xtheres a cat pheremone you can get to comfort her it goes in the air

I’m trying to get her on a prescription diet now. It will be a very slow process as she is very picky. My vet allows you to bring your pet in. They come out to your car and get the pet. Everyone is masked etc and it is very well done. I don’t have to worry about biscuits or dry food she won’t touch either one.

Poor you. It is a difficult time. Cats hate the vets which is understandable💚

Aww, the poor little thing. She has a bit going on there hasn't she. It's so awful for them as they can't tell you how they feel. Some dogs hate vets too not just cats. My last dog would get to the main door of the vets and refuse to go any further - I sometimes had to carry her and she was quite heavy. I hope the vet can help and give her something to ease her problems. All the best. xx

Sorry to hear this Spinner,

I hope you find treatment. Thinking of both of you x

Oh dear Spinner1916, that's sad news. I lost a beloved cat once to kidney disease, having not recognised it was happening and the same fate met one of my daughter's cats.

So to give you a little hope, at least you do know this has happened and it can be managed so that it can often be held in check for a time. These are strained times and every setback seems magnified and causes extra upset. Why not call your vet and see what' he or she recommends. We've found with Kasar that spraying his carrier with Feliway the night before helps him to be calmer. We also leave the carrier on the floor of the living room the night before and he'll often curl up in it to sleep so we can just slip the catch on the door without it becoming a battle royal to get him into it. It might be worth a try.

And for yourself, do come and lean on all of us when you are struggling. It's not quite the same as being with friends in person, but it might be the next best thing! 🙏😊

Thank you Callendershal. You are very kind. I am working with her vet. She has more tests coming up next week if I can get her to the vet! He has said they will compound some liquid gabapentin for me to help calm her down. I hope it works !

I do lean on the people here when I’m down because you are all so understanding and able to lift my spirits as well as give me good advice. It helps that so many of us are pet owners too.
