Nice enquiry about how I was coping with the isolation, she seemed to think we are doing very well. Went through the conversation as to why my chemotherapy stopped and asked was I aware of what ICU would entail if I was admitted and needed ventilation. Told her was well aware as in ICU/HDU for 3 weeks after Whipple- this was the lead in to the big question- do you wish to be recorded as DNR. Having gone through a tough Whipple and a slow recovery I said no but understand that for medical reasons I could possibly not come through & so could be a medical or family decision.

Sadly this is something we all must face now not just the " elderly " my 40yr old son had the same phone call.
A small consolation but I can assure you I have never met a doctor who wasn't upset by having this conversation and I spent 35 yrs in nursing.

I'm so glad that your surgery is checking on its vulnerable patients but I hope it wasn't an exercise in updating records with DNR decisions. That's plain wrong; putting any kind of pressure on anyone to make up their mind in a surprise phone call. At least you had the presence of mind to say 'no' and that any decision would be made in consultation with your family.
Well that's good to know the best thing is to keep yourself and your wife safe to eliminate any chance of coming into contact with it. Now, I hear Gin is very popular and flavoursome, do you have a certain brand you prefer.xx
My daughter will occasionally have a glass of this brand, it is all the rage Gin especially with the younger generation. It has seen a big come back in recent years. When you have a glass, you enjoy it. xx
I Have read the replies that people have made in regards to not being resuscitated now known as DNR. Fair enough people can say that they want to be resuscitated but the Doctors can over rule the family if they don't feel that the patient will have very little quailty of life if they were resuscitated. The best way to safe guard from this decision being taken out of your families hands is by having a power of attorney for medical purposes in place or a court order preventing the hospital or a Doctor saying turn off the life support or don't resuscitate the patient they have then to apply to the courts to get the court order rescind. I am not saying that the Doctor's and Hospital staff will go against family wishes . But I have know it to happen in the time that I was in Nursing. Like the nurse who said in a reply before me. That she's hasn't seen a Doctor not upset about having not to resuscitate a person. That's because doctors are human beings with feelings like you and myself. But sometimes they have to make that decision with.or without the family decision. So that's why it is important to get a power of attorney for medical purposes or a court order for medical purposes. I just wanted to clear a few things up that the Doctors can go against a family wishes for the reasons stated. I hope that this information hasn't upset anyone else but it's best to be prepared for this just in case it happens to them in having to resuscitate or not. Take care and stay safe always. Peter
