I had a really difficult week last week, when my trusty old iMac computer became seriously ill. We knew it wasn't covid19! After all, Macs don't get viruses, but it did seem to be a critical illness. After long online medical consultations it was declared to probably be in need of expensive transplant surgery and an appointment was duly made for admission to the computer hospital (aka Apple store).
Meantime, I had been plodding along trying to communicate with you all on a tiny and small-minded laptop which had the odd habit of throwing the cursor all over the screen, unbidden, whilst I was typing. Dear readers I was so tired of it!
But lo! My Mac was just suffering from some corrupt data on the hard drive and an hour later I was jubilantly escorting my dear old friend home to take up its position back on my desk!
So hopefully I can return to some speedier communications with you all again! ๐๐๐
Thanks Lynd. When needs must, I do use my ipad or iphone, but I trained as a touch typist way back when computers were only manual typewriters and that's how I like to add my contributions. At speed! For a week I used our little 'holiday' laptop with low memory and running Windows which I'm less familiar with. So infuriating when i'd press a key and find some unexpected result. The air was often, I'm ashamed to say, blue! But happiness is now fully restored.๐
We are a dying breed. I do most of my input on my Windows laptop and I like the fact that I'm not restricted in how much I write. I can do the same on my phone and tablet but it's so fiddly and liable to typos. I'm so grateful I trained all those decades ago.
Sorry to hear that your iMac wasn't working well.
No virus and all fit and well, oh how I love the way you have cleverly worded your post Sue - brilliant.๐๐

Thanks Alicia and so pleased to have it back!๐

I bet you are, it's so frustrating when technology plays up.๐๐
Thank goodness Mac pulled through. Great that you are reunited.
I hope it wasnโt touch (type) and go. No doubt Mac was โmonitoredโ whilst transplanted. Iโm stopping with the corney jokes or people will get โboardโ.
I have an ancient Mac Book Pro... and if it does not tell me it has over 6Gb of memory available, I run maintenance routines (including malware removal) and if that does not work, I restart it.
What did you try before you took your computer to Apple?
Do you know how they diagnosed or sorted the problem?
Hi S11m, I used the Apple online support first, which is really good. You get a one on one session with a tech, for as long as is needed and this will often be enough to resolve many issues. There's no hurry or rush and you are given time to go through as many steps as are necessary. There's really only a need for the store when it's suspected that there might be a hardware issue. As my computer is of 2013 manufacture it was suspected I might have a hardware problem, so a 50/50 decision over repair/new purchase, as hard drives are a very expensive part to replace, though doing it tends to afford the computer many more years of life. For example, with my previous iMac, I had a new drive installation at 5 years and it went on for another 6 and was still working like a Trojan when I sold it on.
So we started of course with the simple. Were any plug-ins causing the problem? Then looked at possible memory issues, but that wasn't it. We tried restarts and a clean install of the Mojave OS, which I'd been hanging on to for personal reasons, and I was ultimately told that it might be time to update to the 64bit Catalina. In the event though, at the store, the diagnostics tools showed the hard drive to be in perfect health, but some data had become corrupt, possibly through running some older apps recently.
So I decided in the interests of economy to ditch Mojave and upgrade to Catalina and the erasure of Mojave got rid of my problem. My computer was backed up so I've been able to retrieve most of the files and apps I was running previously and those which are compatible with Catalina, I've kept.
I don't know whether you know but tech help is free for any mac computer/device. If you have 'mac care' it also covers hardware, but I didn't have this. However, as the issue required no spares, the recovery was free.
Iโve had to to turn my iMac off as fan has come on and it seems very hot. Anyone got any ideas please, strange Iโve got problems at the same time as you.
Spooky VelvetSky.! But I do remember this was once an issue with my last imac, when the fan would suddenly come on and make a heck of a racket. And sadly it's so long ago that I can't remember what the cure is. But I think it was simple. You might find something still out there about it online or I really can recommend using online Apple tech help, which is free until parts are discussed! Good luck! ๐
I would be nowhere without my trusty tech resource Alex and specialist software expert Daniela. I'm hyperventilating at the thought of both of them being unreachable (it has happened in the past and I nearly threw my work towel in!)
I so agree that at the merest hint of tech going wrong there's an instant faster heartbeat and an outbreak of sweatiness around the gills Sherin. A flashing light on my internet hub and I can feel terror creeping into my bones! We are all so tech reliant now. When I moved here about 10 years ago now, there was a whole week without internet services and even then it was so terrifyingly discombobulating that I had to rush out and buy a data dongle because every single agency I approached for services soon let me know that 'I could set up everything I needed up online....... ๐ซ'
That made me smile ๐I'm glad you've got your computer friend back my mams was a god send which she bought after my step dad died and got really into photography on it she was brilliant and the computer was called Dave how bizare it was it's it's name given my the manufacturers the same as my step dad, we had many happy years with it but it suddenly went weird and died but mam got a new friend in her smart phone as have I I do have a lap top but I never bother with it I use it for photos we don't have WiFi connection now or landlines I must get my photos off this phone saved incase it dies like my last one did. Enjoy ๐ฅ๏ธ
Gosh you were lucky! Had problem with the 'football' on my last MacBook Pro, & they are not cheap - had to give up & buy a new one but this time (my 3rd) decided instead to go for the 'cheap' version, an Air - very happy & could not live without her now, my husband was always on my previous one, so he also purchased an Air, after buying a microsoft one which he couldn't work, neither could I, so a complete waste of money - so we can now sit happily together doing our various things. Apple are great machines.
Apple products are workhorses and the level of customer service Iโve always experienced has been second to none. And I love that you are left to decide for yourself whether to replace or repair, unless thereโs no alternative. Glad you are loving your โAirโ ๐๐
