Hello! 54yo American female with Swedish ancestry :-). Was diagnosed with PMR in November 24. Started after I overdid it at the gym with weights. On prednisone.

Questions:

1) Does anyone experience tightness in the inner thigh muscles/tendons?

2) Anyone use fish oil with good effect?

Happy to have found this resource for this strange disease :-)

My mother used fish oil and decided she was just throwing her money away so I have never bothered. Perhaps others may think differently. I am rather sceptical about supplements. Apparently over 90% purchased are not needed. Of course some are. I think if my doctor prescribed them I would definitely take them.

Hi. No doubt you will have been advised to take things a bit steady and pace yourself at the gym now, while your body is throwing out inflammatory cytokines every morning. It is quite easy to strain muscles if you push too hard.

There is much written about the benefit of this or that supplement and you could spend a small fortune but omega 3, vitamin D and B12 seem to be recommended alongside a calcium supplement for bone health. I recently added Vitamin C on advice from a chemical pathologist. I can’t say anything helpful about fish oil but I do eat a lot of oily fish and give salmon oil to my older dog.

Thank you, Zebedee44. I haven't been to the gym since! I was a gym newbie at the time and clearly didn't know what I was doing. But who knew that overdoing something that's supposed to be good for you could trigger something like PMR, right? Appreciate your advice.

PMR is indeed a strange illness and it’s often a case of “the straw that broke the camel’s back” when life overload in whatever form sends the inflammation out of control. We must hope that one day some clever people identify the triggers and find an alternative treatment. Meanwhile we all do our best to support each other on this forum with experience and information. Let us know how you get on with the fish oil (It was always the burping that put me off).

Can’t do fish oil - even capsules always remind me of my mother making me have a spoonful in the morning when I was little - yuck!

The ones my chiropractor gave me do not repeat at all and no burping fish. That was always why I never took them too. I'll let you know the cost when I find out.

Welcome from another 50-something from the USA! To answer your question, I do recently have that thigh issue, albeit not too badly..a new one for me, this PMR can move around.

Many of us have noticed it hits any "weak spots" one may have sometimes..think old injury, surgeries, etc. Mine was mainly my neck (have a spinal fusion in there), and oddly my flank/ribs on the right side (no clue why there). My feet had it last year (liveable), now that is gone, and I do have a bad hip, a torn labrum from a fall when rock climbing 10 years ago..so I get pains there, too. The thigh thing just started last November, sat in a camp chair for 2 days and that triggered it..took months for that to subside, but I still get errant pains through both back of thighs (mild).

When I up my pred, everything disappears within 5 days and I feel good. Then I have to taper eventually and they come back..so whatever I have, it is inflammation and is super pred responsive. Haven't gotten below 13 mg, ever..now on 15.5 mg and having some pains, trying to tough them out as they aren't too bad. 2 weeks to go until I attempt 14.5.

Symptoms that move around like that can be typical of palindromic rheumatism - it is one of the PMR-mimics other than this moving around and it would be typical to find difficulty tapering. There are a few people on the forum who have had the two confused.

Thanks, I will do some research. I was offered the Kevzara, but have diverticulitis pretty badly - so after they saw that, that is out, as it can cause perforations..don't need that!

So I just googled it, and I have none of the redness or swelling or even pain in joints, really. I really wish there was a true test for PMR. I will report that my ESR was the lowest it's been a few months ago, 15 instead of low 30s, and that was all while on decent doses of Pred for 2 years now..so i took that as a good sign.

Yes, I've noticed that, too. Old rotator cuff injury, etc. Thanks for your response. I hope the 14.5 goes well.

I tore mine last May, really stinks..I was working again part-time and enjoying it..and now cannot because of it. It is much better, but whenever I do some even easy lifting I can feel it the next day. I was very close to surgery, but then all of a sudden like a miracle, it stopped hurting, like literally the day after I met with the surgeon,lol. . I just am careful now.

I was diagnosed with PMR in Sept. 2023. Worried that my family doctor was going to retire and I wouldn't be able to find a new one, I decided to see a naturopath so that I would have some future care. She took a very detailed history and suggested that I take fish oil for its anti-inflammatory benefits. She stated that it may help me get off Prednisone sooner. Of course there is no way to determine if it has sped up the reduction processs or not, but I have not had any flares of PMR symptoms since starting it whereas I had two previously. She stated that I should take a "therapeutic" dose and I am currently taking An Omega 3+ supplement by Genuine Health (as it is 3rd party tested for purity). I take two capsules daily, for a daily dose of 800 mg EPA and 400 mg DHA.

thank you, proactive. My chiropractor (who suffered from joint issues with Lime disease) suggested I try fish oil. He gave me a few samples of Nordic Naturals ProOmega 2000, which he swears will not repeat on me (biggest problem with fish oil). Has 1075mg omega-3. He says, it is "reasonably priced" but I don't know what that means yet... I figure it can't hurt so if it really is reasonably priced, why not give it a go. I also have Lower Back disc/nerve/inflammation issues, so gotta throw the book at it.

In answer to your first question, that's exactly where PMR hit me hardest. At the start I recall telling my doctor that I had pain and stiffness at the tops of my inner legs. I walked like a cowboy and stairs were impossible.

Glad you didn't find that offensive :-). With 20+ years of living with chronic lower back and foot pain, and now PMR, humor has kept me sane and happy!

Yes to tight adductors. Fish oils? Not so much talk about them. They do have adverse effects (other than the disgusting taste) so not advisable for me (atrial fibrillation) though my rheumy did mention them once and seemed to think they might be useful.

My PMR appeared after a long and wonderful walk at 2000m in the Dolomites. I don't think it triggered it - but that it was there and the repetitive use of muscles was what I noticed. And weights would come in the same category.
