I’m currently on 5mg Prednisolone and have a pre op appointment next week for a prolapse a possible hysterectomy .

Has any one in this group had the procedure with PMR ?

Probably - I had a hysterectomy some 40 years ago, aged 37... but certainly not with GCA [nor PMR] !

What are worried about, the Pred [if so plenty have major operations on that dose - and higher] or the procedure itself - or both?

Thank you for your reply . I’m not worried about the op .

I think I read awhile ago they wouldn’t operate if the dose is above 5mg ( so I’m ok with that) and also it can cause a flare of the PMR ?

Okay - not necessarily - on both counts.

Some surgeons are more stringent about the dose you are on because it can slow down the healing process…so it is something that needs to be discussed.

No reason why you should flare after procedure, but don’t try and reduce the Pred too quickly afterwards - any procedure takes time to recover from.

Hope all goes well …

Hi

I had surgery for a prolapse in October. I had been on 15 mg pred since July . The anaesthetist doubled the dose for the surgery and as I was in hospital for three nights they continued with the 30 gms. while I was there. I went back to 15mg after leaving hospital. My PMR symptoms went completely and I’ve been pain free ever since. Now tapering and down to 6 mg. as per my rheumatologist seen after surgery.

This is just my experience . Good luck .

I am not sure if I still have PMR as I have Inflammatory arthritis and Sjogrens too but am having a pre op for prolapses soon. I am on 3mg Pred. I am also on other Immuno suppressants. I wouldn't have thought the hospital would be worried. I had a hip replacement on 10mg and I was given extra, I can't remember why. I know I will have to stop my other drugs for 2 weeks I think but haven't been told about steroids. Good luck with your operation, how long have you had to wait? I have waited about 3 years.

I waited 18 months for an appointment and was told it’d probably be at least 2 years till the op . Then got a phone call last week to come in for the Pre op as they were doing me soon !! Good luck to you as well 🤗

Hi there - I had a prolapse repair done 2 wks ago. I have both PMR & GCA & on 5mg Prednisone. No problems at all, I followed advice from DLady & doubled my dose after surgery for 1week then back to 5mg. All good.

Good luck & rest, rest , rest!
