pain in right thigh and right butt

I’m eight months into PMR, diagnosed four months ago. I’m trying to get from 10mg of Prednisolone to nine. This is taking weeks.

I’ve been getting pain around my pelvic girdle and a new different pain in my right thigh and butt. My right thigh hurts to touch. Lying on right side at night, it feels as though I am lying on something flat and hard. Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, is this what it is going to be like for the next two or more years?

Given this is one sided pain could it be Osteoarthritis? Might be worth getting an x Ray just in case?

If you have PMR. it hurts to lie on your side and you have buttock pain - trochanteric bursitis is the most likely diagnosis. One study found that 100% of the PMR patients examined with MRI had it and it is worse in PMR than when seen in RA.

Was it a feature of your PMR originally or has it been a late-comer? It sometimes improves with oral pred but often it needs a more localised approach with a steroid injection as well as exercises.

Maybe that’s because your PMR still need 10mg… and it can take weeks- below 10mg suggested taper from guidelines is reduce 1mg every 4-8 weeks.

Also as you are relatively new have a look at this-

You may find under 10mg you will find it easier dropping 0.5mg rather than 1mg, I know I did.

Thanks, I think I’ll do that.

Hi Pyjamalady

Snap! I've been on prednisolone for about the same amount of time as you and am currently down to 8.5 mg a day. I also suffer from similar problems with my right hip area. I've just had extensive x-rays that did not show anything wrong with my hip.

My physiotherapist is aware of the problem and is helping. He freed up my feet to help with walking and that took some pressure off my hips. It might be worth seeing one just in case.

Someone here advised me to reduce by 0.5 mg and this seems to work. pill cutters can be found on Amazon at £3.99!

Hello In the Moors

I’ve started cutting my pills in half. I use a thin-bladed knife.

I had a useful reply for the pain in right thigh/butt and a couple of web links, which I have copied for you.

After the reading about the suggested exercises, I went to the gym (apprehensively) and did all the stretches in the poster and a few weights for my legs and arms. I wasn’t there long. What a difference! I felt better, the pain gone, just a faint reminder from time to time. I shall go as often as I can.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Pyjamalady, those links look very useful. I'm seeing my physio tomorrow and I'll see what he suggests.

Hi Pyjamalady

I saw my physio and he suggested that he keep working on my lower legs and feet. He said that I wasn't walking correctly a few weeks ago and that this would put pressure on my hips. My hips are now more or less pain free although I'm still not walking 100%.

Why do we have to be so complicated?

It’s difficult to walk correctly when lots of things hurt! Glad your hips are feeling better. 😀
