Low carbs

Im 2 years in on my PMR journey with a really bad flare last July. Which took me back to the beginning. After reading on here about eating a low carb diet. I got out my 800 fast keto book and started cooking from it. Where I don’t stick to 800 I do try to be no more than 1,200 calories. And no more than 60grms of carbs. This was 4 weeks ago. I’ve lost 15 pounds ! I don’t eat bread , potatoes, rice or biscuits. I can’t believe how much better I feel. Whilst PMR is still there I’m currently on 10.5mg pred. I can’t believe how much more energy I hv. I try not to snack but if I feel like I need a lift I eat mixed seeds or nuts. But to be honest I don’t feel hungry. Just wanted to share as I know we struggle with our weight due to the steroids . I hvnt been able to diet like this for years. I’m just not hungry. In the book there’s a recipe for flourless muffins I eat 2 of those for lunch instead of a sandwich. They’re really filling. And can be reheated. Hubby loves them too.

Also for those who’s hair has been affected with steroids I invested in a hair topper from a good wig salon. It’s amazing how much more confidence it gives you when your hair looks lovely. My hair has broken off all over. The topper is a game changer for me and it looks so natural. Every one comments on my hair not realising it’s not mine!

Hope this post can help some of you on your journey.

Well done on the weight loss - I think it shows just how much creeps into our diet when we aren't looking closely!

Thank you so much for posting this. I (and my husband) are both interested in losing weight around the stomach. Unfortunately we both love potatoes, bread and rice and my husband eats a lot of biscuits! I have recently had to up my Pred to 4mg from 1.25m, as my neck and shoulders were beginning to complain, but I'm reducing to 3mg from today, for a week.

💖I would really appreciate it if you could tell me the name of the book you mentioned as hubby says he's willing to try out the recipes. Thanks again.💖

It is one of the range by Michael Mosely - available as hardback and Kindle versions from Amazon. I'd give you the link but it would be to my account - no not paying for them for you!!!

However - they are all listed here

thefast800.com/books/

If you go to Amazon you can usually see a selection of each book before buying it.

The site I have have linked also explains what Fast 800 is. There is a whole range of products - supplements and stuff. You don't NEED those if you don't want to spend the money.

Not sure whether can advertise this, but WOB (World Of Books) is a fab resource for second-hand books, cheap and good delivery time.

You can advertise anything that was useful to you!

But my daughter funds my Kindle - my Christmas and birthday pressies in one and I only ever buy ebooks on offer at 99p or I feel guilty. No room here for real books and not that easy to dispose of them, not enough English-speakers.

I mainly use the fast 800 keto it’s Michael Mosley and his Wife Dr Clare Bailey . The food is really tasty . Goan prawns curry is excellent. I write everything down and I make fresh cauliflower rice using lemon juice on it . Very easy to make with a food processor or you can just grate a cauliflower. I then just microwave it. I don’t miss the bread etc . I may occasionally have a small slice of sour dough bread. Good luck . Seeds a nuts are really good to add to salads etc too

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm already a seeds and nuts fan but haven't tried sour dough bread. I'm going to get the book (s) and have a bash. I usually have a salad for lunch but as it's Sunday today I was naughty and had baked beans & sausages on toast with a fried egg. Can only get better from here on in!

I had to embrace a low carb diet as I got steroid induced hyperglycaemia after going onto 70mg of Pred upon diagnosis. Even with insulin it’s very hard to control. I agree re weight loss, I’ve lost 1.5 stone so easily which helps all round mobility and my gastric issues are much better as a result.

It’s not the easiest plan to follow as lots of low sugar foods aren’t low carb so you have to check everything. White bread, rice and pasta are the very worst things but I can have certain wholewheat bread so don’t feel too deprived. I found sourdough to be too high in carbs for me, but surprisingly the supermarket cheapest own brands of wholewheat are the lowest and surprisingly good! I checked every product online before I shopped and it took some time but it’s worth it! Good luck!

Hi l, Thank you for your positive post re. Weight loss. I’ve just turned to my Fast 800 book again as bad habits have put me just back in the nhs overweight realm! If I keep to the recipes whilst shopping it works! During lock down I lost 6/7 kilo & felt great, though that was on a strict diet following their weekly programme online. If I can stick to the recipes hopefully I’ll be trim for son’s wedding in Norway this August 🙏 Sadly I had to make cake for a friend’s Open Garden this weekend 😏😋All the best

Great news on your weight management! I need to get on track too. I do ok for a while, then eat desserts sometimes. I've also been eating sourdough bread with nut butter for breakfast. I need to stick to protein and veggies. And the hair news is great too! Mine is broken off and very thin. Used to be so thick. But it still looks ok, not great, but passing for "normal" so far. Thanks for your inspiring post 💞

Thank you for this ,I put in 2 stone in the first week's of taking steriods, I was so upset, but I literally could not stop eating ! I have battled on and off for the last 4 years ,I have lost some weight but not the 2 stone . I have been looking at the KETO diet and reading your post has made me start on it .Thanks once again fingers crossed.😊
