Left thigh pain

TheGreatPretender profile image

Reduced from 20mg now down to 6mg, mostly fine but left thigh extremely painful making walking virtually impossible.

My question is has anyone else had similar and was it PMR or something different?

I also have severe pain in my right hip and have just developed severe pain in my right thigh. I am also on 6 mg.About 6 weeks ago I got severe pain in both hips and thighs and had to use a cane. It was from Zetia, a cholesterol medication. The Doctor took me off if it and it took 2 weeks to be able to walk without the cane.

I am going to the Rheumatologist on Thursday, and will let you know what happens.

I had something similar in my right thigh. After investigation and x ray it turned out to be wear and tear of the hip. My physio gave me a series of strengthening exercises which have worked. No more trouble walking - just an occasional bit of minor hip pain.

My PMR started with thigh pain & I was having to lift my leg with my hands to get over stiles. The pmr gradually got a lot worse with stiffness in shoulders, back & then GCA when it was all diagnosed. I’m now very wary of thigh pain & stop reducing pred when I start to get it.

My pmr started with thigh pain.I have had 2 lots of xrays which showed nothing really. If I've had a flare it's always been aching thighs.

I did have bursitis a couple of years ago but that was more my hip.

Shoulder hip & leg pain, especially when reducing. My leg swells & so does my knee, very different walking up stairs & my shoulders aches all the time. I'm down to 7mg but symptoms are getting worse fever, fatigue etc. Eyesight is getting worse too! Ps Job Center appointment at 2 pm today, to see if I'm for for work! Oh, oh, oh! Ha ha ha!

Would say a couple of things -

Sounds as if you have reduced too quickly all along especially as you seem to be having a bad time virtually all the time….

and, the fever and fatigue may well be down to your adrenals stuttering to get working again

Link may help you understand the adrenal situation, but think you need to slow tapering as well…..maybe using a slower tapering regime if not already and only 0,5mg a time - also linked.

Have you had eyes checked for signs of steroid induced cataracts?

Good luck with job centre, and why if you’ve been having problems haven’t you asked us about it?…that’s why we are here.

I have a lot of hip & thigh pain, but have been diagnosed with arthritis & sciatica. Not every pain is always connected to our PMR…just food for thought!!

WHERE is the pain and what is it like/makes it worse?

A common problem is trochanteric bursitis - manifests as pain on the outer aspect of the thigh and makes it painful to lie on your side.

Thanks for the replies. Pain has been in the joint, front, side, rear of thigh and buttock but mainly at the moment at the side of my left thigh to just above the knee. I have had an x ray ands there is some arthritis in the joint but I have had that for a while. I'm thinking it is due to PMR as I take co-codamol when the arthritis plays up but they have no effect on the leg pain.

I was diagnosed with exactly that last week by the rheumatologist! So painful, I can't even bear to touch my legs sometimes. In agony through the night. Constantly feel like I've done 3 circuit classes back to back (I'm only imagining how that feels really🤭) and that my muscles are torn. I nearly shot of the examination table when I was prodded and poked. I've been given extra anti-inflams and a double dose of amitryptiline. Am sleeping like a log now which is fab, as everything's a million times worse when you don't sleep, but no reduction in pain during the day. Am booked for phone physio (what a bloody laugh 🙄) between Xmas and new year.

Anti-inflams rarely help in PMR-related bursitis. Steroid jab rarely fails though.

No, they're not working actually! Will see what the physio says about jabs, or will speak to the rheumy nurse. Thank you 👍
