I used to be a bit of an ‘adrenaline junkie’ - for example I’ve climbed over the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge and gone skydiving - I loved the physical ‘buzz’ it gave me for days afterwards. I haven’t done anything as exciting since starting Pred in 2016. I’m currently on 5mg.
Next week my husband and I are going to Wales where we’re planning some gentle walks and pub lunches but we’re also booked to ride on ‘the world’s fastest zipwire’. It’s a treat we booked for my husband’s birthday a few years ago and had to cancel when Covid hit. I’m really looking forward to it and I’m determined to do it while I’m still able. (As well as PMR/GCA/LVV and interstitial lung disease I’m currently being investigated for Parkinson’s.)
What I’m wondering is whether I’ll still get that adrenaline ‘buzz’ or if it will be affected by the long term use of Pred? Guess I’ll soon find out, but I don’t know if anyone knows?

Only one way to find out - hope the weather inproves!
I don't even have to go to Wales, there is one round the corner - but I think I can't as I have neck and back problems so probably not advisable though I would love to!
I drove up to northerm Bavaria last week - had almost fogotten the joy of driving towards the Alps south of Munich and then snaking through them to Innsbruck and over the Brenner. I didn't use the motorway though - too many Germans heading for Lake Garda! Lots of roadworks - they are practically rebuilding the Austrian side - and while I don't mind paying the toll, I do if I then sit in a traffic jam!
Ah yes, Bavaria. I lived in Füssen for almost 5 years back in the mid 80s - wish I'd never left, but was a daft young person who wanted to travel, sigh... I always fancied taking the alternative route from Innsbruck over to Vipiteno rather than use the Autobahn, but never got round to it as I was always in such a rush. With luck I'll get the chance again one day...
It's only about 20 mins extra over the Brenner - and that is assuming there are no holdups on the motorway. Going up Oetztal and over Timmelsjoch to the Jaufen Pass is rather longer but I did it once when they were telling us 14km jams from Brenner down to Sterzing. Lot of traffic there too that day but it was an amazing drive. I counted the hairpins ...
Yes, fantastic, although I've never done that route either sadly. I remember once coming back from Puglia at the end of August one year and it took 20 mins to get through the A22 toll at Sterzing onto the Brennerautobahn and then 20 mins again at the toll at the other end. Moral of the story - don't do Italy in August lol..😂
Blimey, that one looks high!! I thought the one I'd just done in Vegas, 11 storey high down Fremont Street, was high enough 😂 Such beautiful surroundings there in the link........
oh yes, pretty sure you’ll get the buzz. I haven’t been on that zip line but have seen it. You’ll have to tell us about your experience. May be a great way to wake up adrenals! 😁 Enjoy your trip!
I didn’t think adrenaline output was particularly affected by Pred, not like cortisol at least. Anyway, I’m awaiting your results as you as string yourself up and turn yourself into a 70mph rocket all in the name of science 👍. I would make sure you take Pred with you just in case your cortisol requirement outstrips your ability of your adrenal glands to pitch in to top up the 5mg Pred and you feel rubbish afterwards.
Good idea. I usually take lots of extra Pred with me anyway, just in case GCA ever flares... though touch wood it never has so far. We're doing the zipwire on Monday 24th April, fingers crossed 🤞 Will let you know how it goes.
Oh I’m so jealous!! I did the roller coaster at the top of the New York New York Casino in Vegas and few years ago. Hubby wouldn’t join me so I did it by myself … now that’s living!! I too have done Sydney Harbour Bridge, can’t wait to hear about your zip line.
We've just been to Vegas and did the zipwire down Fremont Street, flew like Superman!! I was very brave and kept my eyes open, but my sister had hers shut, so funny.
We went ziplining in Colorado while I was sick. 8 different zip lines, taking you from 12,000 feet to the valley floor. For each one you had to run off a wooden platform & launch yourself over the void. Then you walk a stretch of mountain to the next zip. Last zip was longest & fastest, & took you to top of 40 foot tower, it was fantastic, wonderful & happy making! Hope you enjoy yours, too! Go for it, I say!! The Wales one is short & more of a speed rush, I think.
I'm sure you will still get the buzz. Reminds me of a free-fall come swing ride I did some years ago. It was up to three person rig and two young ladies asked if they could ride with me and, of course, I was only too pleased to oblige. Big mistake. We were first hoisted up, quite high, to the horizontal where we stayed for what seemed like hours whilst the young lady on the end, next to the rip-cord, plucked up enough courage to actually pull it. Finally we were off, straight down an then swung through at pace. Great, except the lady to my left was gripping my arm so tightly that her talons, you couldn't describe them as fingernails, drew blood and when we were finally back on terra firma, I could feel that my right buttock and leg was rather damp. No prizes for guessing what caused that! The ride was still great though and I'm sure you will enjoy it immensely.
I did the Bluewater zip wire yesterday and while I did really enjoy it, I didn’t get as much of a buzz as I would have done pre-Pred. My two grown up children who zip wired with me were buzzing much more. The hardest and most impacting bit was climbing up stairs and walking! Wales zip wire has been a wish for me for many years and I still hope to make it one day. I really hope it lives up to your expectations. Enjoy! 😊
I went on the zip line in the Daintree Forest (Queensland, Australia) last year. I took extra pred that day to cope with what I knew would be a challenging experience. It's around a dozen lines through the forest. I became increasingly weak and shakey as the experience went on . When it was over I simply felt a huge relief and pride in myself for doing it. Yours sounds more like one line of extremely fast exhilaration which would be different.Good luck and good for you!!!
I'm not sure I would recommend it for someone with PMR ! I did it for my brother. I had just heard that he had died in the UK . I determined to live the rest of my holiday for him. He would have LOVED ziplining as he was always a thrill junkie. He would have been highly amused at my terror.....!!
