Another Thank You.

On New Years Eve I wrote a post about pains I had in my calf. Several people advised me to get it checked out, in case of blood clots. I thought it couldn't be that, and the doctor I saw at the private hospital here also thought it wasn't blood clots, because he couldn't see any other symptoms, but he decided to take blood and check anyway. So we went home, assuming all was well. About half an hour later, we were called from the hospital. The results were positive for the possibility of clots, and they wanted me back immediately, prepared to stay overnight. On New Years Eve!!!

So I went back, with overnight things, but determined I wasn't going to stay.

My son argued my case for me, and it was agreed I could go home, after giving more blood for testing. That was NOT nice, and was very painful. I hadn't had the opportunity to drink anything, and getting the blood was very difficult.

However, the doctor managed in the end, and I was asked to return the following day for a scan. TWO clots were discovered, and I was given blood thinners.

If I hadn't taken your advice, the outcome could have been very different.

So, THANK YOU. All of you.

Hope he has learned a lesson - it isn't always obvious and all it needs is a small blood sample. One of my husband's staff died because of complacency in an A&E department - he was "too young" they said, but he'd had an injury paying football.

When you say a blood test, is that a particular one just to detect clots or is it part of a general full blood count test? Reason I'm asking is that I'm suffering with sciatica at the moment (seeing a physio today to confirm) but do get some pain in my calf. I've just had a routine FBC and inflammatory markers check. Would need to look back at my results to check for a clot if that's the test they take.

It was a specific test which can indicate the presence of blood clots, I believe.

It is a test called D-dimer and must be requested specifically
