Correct way to take Lansoprozole

Morning all, I have been on prednisolone for about 16 months and didn’t want any more chemicals inside me so didn’t ever take the Lansoprozole, however am getting a bit of heartburn so thinking maybe I should. Problem is , I take my steroids the minute I wake with yogurt then have a cup of tea..

Information for Lansoprozole says 30 mins before food . So , should I take with the steroids or wait 30 minutes after taking the Lansoprozole ( problem on Sundays when I have to take Alendronic acid 30 mins before) Oh how I hate this wretched condition and it’s henchmen. ! Any info about how you manage your meds gratefully received. Happy New Year

You do need to take it 30mins before food, but it doesn’t have to be before breakfast - although the patient information leaflet (PIL) does say best taken in morning, it can be taken at a time more convenient to you…just make sure you take it the same time every day.

If you’re not sure, check with pharmacist.

Have you tried something like Gaviscon (liquid or chewy tab) if you hate the idea of Lanzoprazole?

Hi ive been on Lansoprazole for as long as i can remember, tried coming off, but no way pain is to much, so what i do is put the pill by my bed with glass of water then drink it when i open my eyes, so the time i do get up and have steriods and breakfast the 30mins are up seems to work ,

As DL says - doesn't have to be before breakfast - any meal will do and the effect does last for the whole day. The half life - the time to get the substance out of your system is only an hour or so but once you are taking it regularly the acid-inhibitory effect is up to 48 hours because of the way it works.

Hi...as they point out...I take mine around dinner. Works fine. Hope changing the time makes it easier. Good luck.

If you have the enteric coated pred they should not require a PPI such as Lansoprazole. Although you may need it for other reasons of course.

hi Crochetgardner, I took lanzoprazol for many years before I was diagnosed with PMR because of stomach ulcer problems. It was changed to omeprazol after diagnosis. I have always taken it last thing at night with water and have never had any problems. Perhaps this might suit you. Take care.

Yes. I've taken Rabeprazole for years for GERD, but take at bedtime. No problem. My problem is trying to fit the Alendronic Acid into the mix. I get up at 5:15AM and have my coffee immediately. So I'd have to take the AA at 4:30-4:45 because you're supposed to sit up for 1/2 hour afterward. I take my food with Pred around 7:00AM then it's off to work (I work from home). I think the AA is going to have to be Sunday mornings. I get great anxiety when introducing new meds into my system. Was overdosed at the hospital one time and been very apprehensive since.

I was prescribed omeprazole, but, like you I hate taking drugs, so I dropped it a few months ago, and it doesn't seem to have made me any worse. I take Gaviscon occasionally if I feel any discomfort. However, perhaps I am not the best person to advise you, as I stopped taking the omeprazole off my own bat!

Hi , I take my Lansoprazole to bed with me with a glass of water and take it as soon as I wake up, then have my Prednisolone about 30mins after with breakfast . It seems to work well like that, I do need to start taking Alendronuc acid too but not sure how to work that into the regime!

Of course we're all different but, if it helps, I take Prednisolone straight after breakfast and Omeprazole last thing at night. The Omeprazole med pre-dates the Prednisolone by many years and I've always found taking it last thing to work for me.

If the gastritis or heartburn isn't bad i think the suggestions of Gaviscon are sound. Do you swallow the Pred with a good draught of water and stay upright immediately afterwards? Personally I'm not a great fan of PPIs (omeprazole, lansoprazole etc) but since ranitidine has been withdrawn we don't have many choices. Just a thought? The tea is black tea not peppermint herbal tea?. Peppermint reduces sphincter pressure in the stomach and encourages burping and can cause reflux of stomach contents.

There are several other H2 antagonists including famotidine and cimetidine.

Hi,

I have recently been put on alendronic acid too and this is how I take my tablets on that day of the week:

I take my Omeprazole (more or less same thing as lanzoprazole) when I wake up and on an empty stomach and wait half an hour before I eat breakfast

I eat breakfast (a nurse told me yogurt is not enough alone so I have a banana too) and then take my prednisolone.

1 hour before my lunch I take my alendronic acid, sit or stand upright for half an hour, as instructed by my doctor, then prepare and eat lunch.

This order seems to work for me.

I know exactly how you feel having gone from being very fit and healthy and rarely taking even a paracetamol. However, if this is what gets us through the worse and fingers crossed eventually better, then we just have to do it. I wish you all the best and hope you find a way of taking your tablets that suits you.

All the best x

As this is to protect your stomach, I always take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast, with plenty of water but no other drink. On the one morning a week I take Alendronic Acid, I give the Lanzoprazole for that day - with no ill effects. I take the Prednisolone with breakfast, allowing at least 30 minutes after taking the other medication. I know what you mean, I hate taking medication, too - but aren't we lucky to have some effective treatments for this horrible disorder?

It isn't THAT critical - the onset of action is not in half an hour and it takes 6 days toget to the maximum effect as it builds up.
