I just started on Pantoprazole, generic for Protonix after suffering for 5 months with terrible stomach pain, excess acid in my throat, and heartburn. I waited because of the side effects of bone loss, etc. The warnings say to only use it for 2 months, and at most 1 year.
Are there any harmless remedies that work for heartburn while on Prednisone? I always take it after breakfast, but I feel like I have to eat all the time to keep the acid down. Gaining 2 pounds per month is not good for me either.
The Protonix I took yesterday really helped a lot! But scared of what it will do to my body. What is your experience?

There is no such thing as a harmless remedy. The problem with many over the counter medications such as antacids is rebound. You are already experiencing it currently. That is where you feel the need to eat otherwise your heartburn is back. My suggestion is to think about the risk to benefit ratio of taking any medication or supplement. Uncontrolled acidity and reflux can cause harm too. Acidity can cause esophagitis, ulcers, gi bleeds and Barretts esophagus. Yes ppis can cause issues also. It is a hard decision to make.
Hi pottery lady. I have taken a PPI , lanzoperazole for a long time (15mg). I have acid reflux . The last 3 months the reflux has become much worse , so much so I had to have an endoscopy. I have developed a hiatus hernia so now medication has doubled to 30 mg. I asked my GP about the possible damage to my bones and he said the advantage outweighs the risk , the acid could damage my oesephagus! So that’s where I am . I fished my prednisolone in January this year. Hope that helps a little x
Hi Potterylady. I too have reflux and a disgusting taste most of the time along with bad breath. I was advised to use Gaviscon which helped but very recently found I have been ingesting too much calcium (thought I was doing the right thing but .....)! In my youth, Enos was the go to thing in our household for tummy issues but I couldn't find it in our local chemists. I therefore opted for Andrews liver salts!!! No Ca as far as I can see, it settled my acidity for a while and the only side effect, I think caused by that, was mild diarrhoea. I now wait for all the dire warnings about it which will not help you and will put me back to square one 😵😂😂😂
Wow, so Gavison must have calcium from what you said. Yes, I thought we were supposed to be taking calcium too. I hope you get it solved and get out of pain! Thank you for your info!!
