Heartburn and steroids

Sorry to post twice so soon just wanted to also ask about heartburn which I’m beginning to suffer from again. A few months ago my doctor put me on Lansoprazol, unfortunately I reacted really badly to these so stopped and tried to alter diet to help. However in last few days the heartburn has come back, my throat always seems sore and my chest hurts. Anybody else experienced these symptoms? Any advice re foods? Or should I try a different anti acid prescription? Thank you I’m getting desperate trying to deal with all the different symptoms and flare up of PMR again 🙏

That is exactly what we are here for. There is usually someone here round the clock. A lot of people experience problems with Lansoprazole. I would get the GP to try an alternative and stick to quite bland foods Rennie’s are quite useful as a stopgap. Poor you this is miserable and the drugs we take are harsh.

Thank you so much for your reply. You are absolutely right having the PMR is one thing yet it’s often the medications that can cause even more problems! 🙏

Maybe use Gaviscon or the like for a few days but definitely discuss the PPI with your GP. Some people do better with another PPI, there are several and pantoprozole has the reputation of having fewest problems with adverse effects. But if you can't get on with them, there is a trend back to using the older H2 antagonists like cimetidine which work in a different way and so have different (and usually fewer) side effects.

Do you take a calcium supplement like Adcal? They can be used as an antacid too - same ingredient as Rennies! - but more for the acute case. What you are describing sounds more like ongoing reflux and that is only going to be helped by reducing the acid production. And Gaviscon might be a better alternative there,

I just realised my posts isn't that clear - Gaviscon will be better for acute use than Rennie type things but to stop the acid production you will need a different PPI or an H2 antagonist.

Gaviscon for me, Sunshine8888 and you can get it in handy small sachets which is great for pockets and bags! My heartburn, though infrequent, is made worse by caffeine, and also not eating on time!
