Immuno-deficiency and 4th Covid Jab

Just to underline what most of us are discovering re- 4th jab, it's up to you to pursue it. Just had mine and the process was enlightening (or depressing). I phoned my GP surgery and the receptionist asked the reasons for my asking for 4th jab -cited steroid treatment and she told me to go to their practice pharmacist who is set up to deal with this . He spent 10 minutes trawling through my records to get sight of anything that proved a consultant had put me forward for the 3rd 'booster'. Fortunately the letter came up. The fact that the NHS sent me a PCR pack and the chance to use new drugs if I got Covid was not on the records. In fact, nothing done by the NHS appears automatically in your GP records, the two systems do not talk to each other and the mess over the 3rd 'booster' has muddled it further -it wasn't a 'booster', just third jab and anyone immune-compromised is entitled to a 4th jab 12 weeks after the 3rd, you just need a letter. My OH sat through this but although 78 and with kidney disease was judged not eligible and nothing would persuade the pharmacist to to do it. So, dear friends, fight your corner as no-one will do it for you.

I had no problem. The admin at my doctors surgery said they would get me a letter to take to the drop in vaccination centre. They did and this was readily accepted and I had my 4th jab on Saturday. You are correct in saying it is up to us to sort but my surgery did not question it just provided the letter

Lucky you Koalajane my Dr reckons being on 3mg prednisolone I do not need a fourth jab so no letter. It's now 2years since rheumy discharged me telling me to stay on 3mg as a maintenance dose.I also received a testing kit from N H S

The important bit is the dose you were on at the time of your initial vaccinations.

I have been so lucky ,my surgery has really been on the ball and I received a phone call yesterday to say I could have my forth Vaccine on 9th Feb , explained I could not have it earlier as so many days had to pass since my dose of Covid just before Christmas, best of luck to those who are struggling to get it.

I rang the Surgery yesterday with three questions (pushing my luck, l know) but she did have the answer to where to get the ‘4th Jab’/Booster - down at the Walk In Centre where l had my ‘3rd’ Jab But as she couldn’t answer my 3rd Question she booked my Blood Test for next week (by way of compensation) 😂

Like you I was sent the email and PCR pack by NHS but when trying to book a 4th jab on the NHS website the computer just says no.

I fought my corner, but was told I don’t need it as now on 5mg, & it’s time to look to the present & future, & not look backwards. Mentioned JCVI & that I was on 10mg at first jab, but no dice! No 4th jab. But I genuinely think my GP feels I don’t need it. He also said those boosters are key for people with certain types of cancers etc. The way I look at it…if there’s another variant we will be top of queue for next booster, &, as we are virtually shielding anyway, & very careful, wearing FFP2 masks for doctors & FFP3 masks for hospital appointments, that will do for now! I have the PCR priority test kit & the details about being priority for anti viral drugs! Tbh, I think my OH is more likely to be very sick, with asthma, COPD, enlarged heart & older than me…but that group isn’t even considered for early jabs or extra boosters. So, maybe we don’t need it? If on under 10mg dose daily…at this time, that is!!

I suspect it may hinge on other countries in the end. To come here you need your Vax Pass - which is valid for 6 months from the last jab. And that COULD change and be even shorter.

Or it could just go away, like our restrictions! Who knows. But I’m ‘watching you’ as we’ve agreed Italy is the first place we would like to go when we are free again! S x

Not yet it won't in the EU!

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply toPMRpro

Fair comment…we will go to Switzerland instead!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toPixix

Think they were pretty bad with Covid too! Italy has just announced the entry requirements for EU citizens are being reduced to just the the Green Pass as of Feb 1st and it indicates in the local online paper there are also changes for other countries/travel corridors but they don't give details. I imagine the UK will get there eventually. Our Covid figures today are falling dramatically - it is SO quiet, as we keep saying, they are all in quarantine so can't go shopping!

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply toPMRpro

Yes, not great (Switzerland)…but they’re not in the EU! I receive a weekly bulletin from Switzerland telling us the latest, & whether UK citizens are welcome…or not! Our daily numbers (UK total) don’t include anybody who has Covid for the 2nd, 3rd etc time, & as 30% of omicron cases are people who have had Covid before (as published yesterday) they are much lower than reality! A million children are off school was announced, too.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toPixix

I suspected that was the case - quick massage of the figures to make it look less bad ... I assume you are taking the camper? Still have to go through the EU - or does it fly?

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply toPMRpro

No, we would fly, & not yet! Need to see what happens in the next few months. But it takes a while to plan it all, & I enjoy the planning aspect, too! S x

What do you do without the camper?

Love going hiking in the Swiss alps. We’ve spent many holidays tramping across the beautiful meadows. We could drive there, but it would make the trip so long, guess we could see some of France on the way, lots of people go by road…I get bored easily, &, if the weather is good, I prefer to be out in the air, not in a van!! Each to their own! When we came nearer to you, at Merano, we took buses & trains to the base of cable cars & chair lifts & loved being up in the mountains there, too! S x

Good walking here too ;)

Um…which village are you in, please…will look up the area…& I’d love to go to the Aosta Valley, too! I rather like the German/Italian mix, as I can speak German easier than Italian, where I have a truly limited vocab! Good idea, thanks!

though I live in the village where you turn off the main road just outside the town - which is the image used for Bruneck's bars and restaurants! They've changed it all again - there were more pictures of us before! And we probably have the best pizza chef in the area ...

Do we need the 4th jab? It is not protecting us from omicron and delta is pretty much gone because of it. Shouldn’t we wait for a vaccine that will cover the new strains of omicron because the virus is not done mutating?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply tosingingloud

It IS protecting from serious illness and death with Omicron It isn't stopping you catching it - but that never was to be expected from the start. No vaccine is 100% protection against catching something. It does make it like a cold for most people instead of being really sick. The ICU patients here in Italy are now all non-vaccinated people. The protection does wane - and it isn't perfect. But it is far better than not having it.

And I have just this minute read a statement from the Health Ministry here in Italy:

Despite the Israeli opinion in view of their research that a 4th jab IS needed, Italy considers that the 4th jab isn't justified at present for healthy subjects. But it probably IS a very good idea for CEV patients - like us - and doctors should make the decision on a case by case basis.

Pixix profile image
Pixix in reply tosingingloud

I agree. Perhaps we don’t ALL need it! Yes, we all have PMR and/or GCA, but some take 1mg a day steroids & some take up to 60mg a day. Some take other drugs which immediately puts them into the vulnerable category, or have other diseases like RA. But those who ‘only’ have PMR/GCA & are on less than 5mg? I’m not so sure. Can we really say that all of us are CEV? I’m not so sure about that…putting all of us in one clinical category seems unlikely to me. Just a thought.

I can do it - if I have to. I was going to use the train but in the end took the car as they have a carpark and wen shopping after. The earlier tie would possibly have meant I was there for a shorter time!! "You need half an hour" she said. Don't know how long she's worked there - don't think he's ever done anything in half an hour of MY time. Always take a book ...
