Yes, it’s not pleasant! Steroids do make one more susceptible to fungal infections as well as others and this effect reduces with dose. The doctor can give you various types of anti fungal treatments. However, bear in mind that steroids can make your oral mucosa (skin) more sensitive and over use of mouthwashes to stop gum infections can both irritate and mess with the normal mouth bacterial balance that helps keep fungal infections at bay. For example, I found Corsodyl was really bad for that and only ever use it as a spot on treatment in acute situations.

Quite common when on Pred - especially early days when immune system is deranged (as PMRpro describes it). I needed a couple of courses of nystatin to cure it.

Funnily enough I had bother with it during PMR without pred ...

Yes...been there,...done that, there are tablets & mouthwashes available through the doctor, & they worked well for me. Mine was always after or during courses of antibiotics & sadly, that’s quite common. Not sure if you’ve had those recently, sorry, hard to remember all your posts as you’re getting a lot of non PMR things now, I think! Let’s hope that’s your lot for now, you’ve had enough, I reckon! Hope you feel better soon, & I’d advise asking your doctor for some treatment as oral thrush is unpleasant, for sure! Sending a hug!

I tried everything mentioned above and more but nothing helped! Eventually it disappeared as my steroid dose reduced 😀

Me too! but the GP gave me antibiotics and it disappeared really quickly!

In that case it wasn't thrush which is a fungal infection and doesn't respond to antibiotics - in fact, they often result in an attack of thrush because they upset the balance of bacteria in the mouth and gut,

Oh, sorry😔. It was Miconazole 20mg/g oromucosal gel

Spot on! All the -onazoles are fungicides, Haven't met mycoconazole before but is sounds good. Sometimes it can be a right performance!!!

Haven’t heard of either. I’m in uk

Miconazole is OTC as well as prescription. In the uk, it’s Daktarin oral gel (15g) over the counter.

My doctor told me that thrush is caused by prednisone. I have it too and it is awful. He prescribed Nystatin that I take 4 times a day for it. It helps somewhat but is still there. I wish I could tell you what else works to make it go away. Maybe someone else may have some tips for us.

The thrush isn't CAUSED by the steroids - it is a common infection anyway when the body's microbiome is out of balance but being on steroids can suppress the immune system and allow the fungal infection get the upper hand. I had recurrent thrush long before pred, just having PMR seemed to make it worse. Something that can become a problem is if it gets into the gut, obviously likely if you have oral thrush, and then it can get all over the place - and may be the unrecognised cause of UTIs, especially when the urine cultures are negative.

It is important to take certain measures to reduce the chances of it returning after stopping the medication - like changing your toothbrush if it is oral thrush. The article suggests things you can do to help.

Thank you PMRpro for the link it was very helpful. For the past month I feel nauseous most of the time and I'm wondering if it has something to do with the thrush? My doctor doesn't seem to know what is causing me to feel this way. I appreciate any suggestions.

If it is in your throat I suppose it could be irritating - you know, a bit like sticking your finger down your throat to make yourself sick? Just looked it up and yes, if thrush is affecting the upper gullet it can cause nausea and sickness and if it gets worse, so do the symptoms, I needed a few months of nystatin to clear mine so it didn't come back because it was just a vicious circle though it was fairly mild really, just there all the time.
