I’ve had oral thrush for 8 weeks now. My GP prescribed a course of Nystatin which didn’t make any difference. I then bought a couple of tubes of Daktarin, still no better. My dentist recommended using Corsodyl mouthwash twice daily (which I’m still using every day). I eat a probiotic yoghurt each day and do salt water mouthwashes after eating. I sterilise my toothbrush after every use. My GP has now prescribed a 2 week course of Daktarin, I’m half way through that but there isn’t any improvement.
Has anyone EVER got rid of oral thrush and if so how did you manage it? I have to say mine isn’t even that bad, the dentist has assured me that it’s only mild but I’ve read that if you don’t get rid of it, it can spread throughout your body.
Any suggestions gratefully received 😘

Most unpleasant experience. Obviously there are dietary changes you can make and cut out anything with sugar. Some also take things like mushrooms, yeast based products out of their diet. I used warm salt water gargles too. In the end I had to take Fluconazole in addition to the things mentioned above. It took a while. Hope you manage to get it under control.🌻
Thank you for your reply. I too use warm salt water gargles. I had considered asking my GP if I could try Fluconazole but then read that it can have a moderate interaction with Prednisolone. Apparently, it can increase your blood levels and effects of Pred.
Did you have to adjust your dose of Pred whilst taking Fluconazole?
I have diabetes so am in a constant battle with thrush... especially at higher doses. For the sake of a day if two of increased blood glucose (which didn't show much in my meter measurements) it was worth it. I also bought a very cheap bag of 10p each toothbrushes and, despite the fact it was not in line with my other environmental decisions, I changed my tooth brush every day for 2 weeks. Some people bleach their tooth brush but no matter how much I rinsed my brush it didn't help my mouth. I tried sterident too to clean the brush. Didn't help. For really persistent cases of thrush that ends up everywhere some Dr prescribe 6 week courses of Fluconazole. Fortunately I haven't yet had to do that!
To diminish the guilt of doing something environmentally unsound, you can recycle the toothbrushes for all sorts of cleaning chores around the house - scrubbing grout, cleaning taps etc etc
I did overcome it many years ago but i cannot remember how we treated it. Definitely no sugar diet. And I ate lots of no sugar greek yogurt. There is hope!

I had persistent Oral Thrush, l had Chemo during my PMR Journey & that did a lot of damage to mouth including Thrush.
I had several swabs done to check it was Thrush, l did the toothbrushes, the Nystatin, the Anti Fungal Tablets, which believe me are no fun l’m sure l’ve written a Post on it.
Eventually, it dawned on me that l was perhaps ‘feeding’ it with one of my Post Chemo Products, which all though bandied to be Sugar Free perhaps wasn’t?........
I still have issues with my mouth but it is nothing compared to what it was & l’ve had multiple courses of Antibiotics this year & kept the Thrush at bay.
I do everything you describe, I have a toothbrush steriliser - nice cos it is soaking in bleach and inaccessible to flies or flying toilet stuff if lid not down....... I stopped sugar and alcohol too. Mine went eventually. Good luck!
I’d avoid Corsodyl like the plague because it’s going to remove the useful bacteria that suppress the thrush fungus. If you do it’ll take time to rebalance the oral flora.
Have you reduced sugar and carbs in your diet? Candida feeds off it and some people are more susceptible than others.
Thanks for the info. I have been using Corsodyl twice a day under the instruction of my dentist. I had read that mouthwashes shouldn’t be used but I thought as it was alcohol free it would be ok. I will stop using it from now on and see if it improves.
I have reduced my sugar, although I do eat fruit. Carbs are a bit harder to reduce, any more than I have already, as I don’t want to loose any more weight.
Using probiotics might help too - healthy body microflora in general should help. And yoghurt is said to help when used topically - also a probiotic effect, especially if you get plain natural yogs with added good bacteria.
Just to say I sympathize and can relate. I have angular chelitis. So far confined to lips. It has improved over time. Can offer no advice for thrush but the ones who know , have thankfully done so above. Hope you find a solution. That must be miserable. My best to you.
I had two goes with Nystatin, many with Corsodyl etc. Eventually I was tested for oral thrush and it came back negative. The GP I next saw took one look at it and told me to Google 'Geographic tongue'... It looks unsightly but I'm stuck with it!
If you have ever made yeast bread, you know that salt retards the growth of yeast.
Based on that fact, I keep several small jars of salt water (2 tbsp salt to 1.5 cup water) around, which i use for a small rinse every time I pass the kitchen or bath sinks. Just a sip, swish and spit.
Works for me. Also restrict the blatant carb foods, pastries, sweets, etc.
Salt water is very good as Purplecrow said. You can also try an efficient home remedy: baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) as mouthwash. Dissolve half of a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Use this solution to rinse your mouth often, at least after every meal. Good luck!
I have oral thrush and fear it has spread to my ear and other parts of my body. I have Graves’ disease (auto immune thyroid disease) and have been on strong antibiotics multiple times these last 9 months and prednisone for for a severe tooth infection due to neck arm and leg pain.
My acupuncturist told me of a herbal supplement called Biotics Research A.D.P. Digestive Formula which is oregano oil pills.
I read great reviews and starting tomorrow. My acupuncturist is an MD and has had many patients cure this as well as sinuses problems (which I am having now which I believe is due to the fungus overgrowth).
It can be taken daily for overall health too. I am on a prescription Clitrinazole 10mg 3 times a day. It has improved my tongue. But believe mine has spread and needs more.
Praying it will work and thought I would send along for your review as well.
Very interesting, thank you. Can I suggest you start this as a new thread and I’m certain you will receive a lot more replies. It is likely to get lost amongst this thread as readers don’t always scroll down to read the last comments.
