No, you must not stop your Medication unless expressly told by your Surgeon but you MUST NOT STOP STEROIDS - you must inform your Surgeon but most importantly the Anaesthetist. I will attach you two leaflets one for Patients on Steroids Undergoing Surgery & one on Sick Day Rules.

Good Luck with Surgery 💐

Panic Over! No - you leave your dose as it is & the Anaesthetist will give you hydrocortisone cover in theatre but it’s worth checking with your Rheumatologist what dose you should take Post Operatively as you may well need some additional cover. I went from 7.5mg to 10mg for 2weeks Post Operatively on the recommendation of my Rheumatologist.

Kind Regards & Good Luck 💐

I should talk to your consultant about it and see what they say.

Thank you for asking the question - I am awaiting a new hip and have seen two orthopods the first was definitely up to speed with increasing the steroids but the second one who I hope will do the keyhole operation seemed only to be considering anti-biotics.

Hi Sorop. No need to increase your dose preoperatively. The anesthesia provider should be told about your dose and your duration of use of corticosteroids.

As has already been said the Anaesthetist is the one to talk to. I had intravenous hydrocortisone during and after surgery plus my Rheumy was involved in increase of Prednisolone dosage afterwards. I have GCA and PMR. You will be looked after and will have the opportunity to share your anxieties. Best wishes. 🌺
