Well you are not going to believe this, but, my op got cancelled, 3.30pm today, ran out of time, the op is going to be a lot bigger than they thought, surgeon told me I will need bone graft taken from my lower leg to build up bone on hip, plus muscle transfer.
He’s on holiday now for 3 weeks so earliest they can get me in is August. 😟
I feel absolutely exhausted, don’t know why as all I’ve done is sit in a chair all day waiting for the op. Nothing to eat or drink since last night. I had to be there for 7am and wait.

Oh Mayo, how awful for you, l am truly sorry 😢 The anticipation & waiting is extremely tiring......Is your Rheumatologist based at the same hospital as your Surgeon as l think it would be beneficial for them to have a discussion re your Prednisolone Dose Post Surgery.
Please keep us in the loop & l’m sure you’ll be glad to get into your own bed tonight.
Thank you so much for your kind reply, yes my rheumatologist is at the same hospital so I’ll get in touch with him.Just can’t believe how tired I am. I will definitely go to bed early tonight.
Get yourself something to eat & have a good rest tomorrow as you could get a bit of a ‘Stress Kick Back!’
When l had my Surgery the Registrar rang my Rheumatologist to check what dose of Pred l needed Post Op & she raised it by 2.5mg per day for two weeks then back to 7.5mg so l would imagine that you will need some kind of amendment to your current dose.
Did l send you the links on Patients on Steroids having Surgery & Sick Day Rules?
It all seems a bit bizarre. You would have thought he would have known that before the day of the actual op. When did you last see him? I sat all day waiting for an op with a general anaesthetic having arrived at 7am in the morning. They then told me I could have it at 10pm that night. I had not eaten since the previous day, so I decided to go home. When I finally had the op, it took one and half hours, so it would have been nearly midnight if I had waited on the original day.
Thank you, I had a bone graft a good few years ago, on the same hip, it was allograft, I didn’t know anything about it until they woke me up and told me.
It’s just the thought of taking it from my lower leg, another scar, I’ve heard that’s very painful. It was just a shock as it was never mentioned before, he tells me I have no bone covering my thigh to attach muscle to, no wonder it’s so weak.
Well I know why you are exhausted!!!! So sorry and hopefully you will be first on the list next time since they have cancelled you twice now. I imagine the ones ahead of you overran too.
Thank you,Well I’ve been told I will be first on list next time . Yes, he had a very big op before me, then he told me me my op was going to be a lot more complex than he first thought, then a emergency came in.
HiHe’s actually I plastic surgeon, he deals with complicated procedures involving muscles and skin grafts etc on the bones, he only works at the Nuffield once a week, the rest of the time he work at John Radcliffe, or private.
I was put back as they had an emergency when I was supposed to be second on the list. I’m not too upset if someone was needing emergency surgery, I’ve had that happen to me when a poor lady was bumped off the list because of me when I dislocated my hip.
What an awful experience to go through. I'm so sorry you've had to endure that. The whole build up, anticipation, preparation and anxiety that comes before an op is challenging enough when the surgery actually goes ahead, but to then be sent home at the 11th hour with the procedure not being completed must be so disappointing and mentally draining. Just try to accept what's happened.... there's nothing you can do to change it now but you can use the extra time you have to ensure you're as well as you possibly can be in readiness for the August date. Wishing you all the best. My fingers are crossed for you.
Thank you for your kind words.I’m feeling a little better now, just a bit of a shock when it happened, also being told the op is going to be more complex, all too much to take on in one day.
Of course it is. You've got through it though and all credit to you. Try to rest, relax and take comfort from knowing you'll be in good hands. It'll be ok.
Just wanted to add that it's far better the surgeon is fully prepared for your now 'more complex' surgery. Everything happens for a reason and whatever that reason, if he suddenly felt he required more time to ensure a successful outcome then that can only benefit you.
You will have been in a state of high tension and stress. Absolutely exhausting! You have no real choice but to wait and work on getting into a calm, grounded state, focusing on a great outcome. I really feel for you.
So sorry to hear this, at the very least, it must be really frustrating. I can't speak from personal experience but my next door neighbour asked me to keep an eye on her house when she she went in for a cancer operation last week (it had unexpectedly returned). She was in for 11:00, been prepped and ready to go to theatre when they told they had no staff and sent her home. No new date yet. To say she was frustrated, and fed up would be an understatement. Hopefully your surgeon will come back from holiday fully refreshed and on top form for your extended op.
Frustrating and exhausting for you. After sleeping in your own bed, hope you are feeling more positive this morning. We are all rooting for you, and you can at least use the next 3 weeks to make sure you're in as good physical form as poss. Big hug (ha ha). Chin up - as no one says anymore, bur you know what I mean.😘
Oh I do indeed, thank you so much, It took some time for me to get to sleep as I was probably still in shock, I think it will tell on me today as my eyes are very fuzzy today, I may well take a few extra pred for a couple of days just to get me back on form.
Oh you poor darling. You must feel completely shattered having screwed up your courage and ready to get on with it. I hope you’ve had a good and fortifying meal that will make you feel a bit better, I think sometimes hospital admin is so complex that administrators forget that patients are human beings and that how we feel has an effect on healing. Thinking of you - you will get there...❤️
Thank you,Yes I’m a bit more positive today, obviously the op is going to be a lot more involved so maybe he’ll be fortified when he returns from his holiday .
I’m actually surprised by how much it’s taken out of me, I’ve slept most of today, yet I still feel tired. I will get there, just taking a bit longer than I’d like.😍
Getting ready for a major surgery and then having it cancelled is enough to stress one out but then to find out the surgery will be even more extreme would put anyone in exhaustion. I'll be praying for you. My back surgery is in August and I'm sure it is what is adding to my emotional state even now. Take care of yourself.
Thank you so much for your kind words, I hope too that your your surgery goes well. Yes you are quite correct in saying that getting ready for surgery puts a lot of strain on your body, and as you say to be told it’s even more than you thought. I’ve calmed down now but it’s taken a lot out of me, I’m trying to remain positive and at least it’s now given me time to adjust to what’s going to be done.
All the best for you in August, please let us all know how you get on.
