Hi, I have been on steroids for nearly a year and have tapered down to 7mg. I recently had a blood test which revealed that my medication has contributed to my cholesterol increasing to 7.1.
My doctor wants to prescribe statins, but I’m reluctant to get involved with another drug that has unpleasant side effects. Do other members have any advice on this situation?
Thanks

My Cousin had a stroke and her level was high. The stroke clinic told her a bowl of porridge and a whole orange (not juice) every morning for breakfast, level came down slowly and around six months later good and it stayed there. Now 92 and still has both for breakfast.
BTW if you do decide to take a statin - look at the side effects before deciding which one.
I have a raised cholesterol level but don't take a statin - with the blessing of my cardiologist. I took a half dose for about 10 days and was almost in a wheelchair I was so weak and it took months to recover to where I had been physically immediately before. Never again!!! There is no evidence that it benefits women without a cardiac history and atrial fibrillation doesn't come under that heading but it is different for men so you probably need to discuss your risk profile with someone who is open minded about statins. They are associated with muscle pain and some list PMR as a possible adverse effect but some (including simvastatin and atorvastatin) are worse than others.
Hi I’ve had a couple of cholesterol tests that showed a total level of over 7 but the ratio of HDL and LDL was very good so my GP was happy. That may change who knows? Also advice may be different as you are male. I’d certainly get a bit more information/medical advice. My husband has been on statins for years with no problems all No PMR though. All good wishes.
Have taken statins for many years with no side effects. Started Prednisolone 15mg 2017 , have just managed to wean my self of them. In addition to the steroid I was taking Alendronic Acid for bone density and Omneprazole for stomach acid probs. Have now stopped all of these. The thing with long term steroid use is the effect on the immune system.
I am on statins and have taken prednisolone along side and have had no side effects. I am now off prednisolone because after 8 months they have said I do not have PMR they have told me I have shoulder impingements in both shoulders so now waiting to see the Ortho dept.
