Surgery and PMR

Yesterday I saw an orthopaedic surgeon as I need a hip replacement and when I asked him about risks with having PMR he said it may flare after surgery. I’m on 2 mg of pred and have been trying to taper off them but had to recently increase my dose from 1 to 2 and think I’m on the minimum I should be for now. I know a few of you have had hip surgery while having PMR and wondered what your experience was like?

Many thanks kind people. X

Stay where you are until surgery - one lady who had very successful hip surgery while still on a low dose of pred was told by the medical team to not attempt to reduce before or too soon after the operation.

You may need a bit most post-op but you may not and it is a "wait and see" job!

I had a total knee replacement last February when from memory I was on 7mg. The anesthetist gave me hydrocortisone during the op. I had no flare but kept on 7mg for another three months before I attempted to reduce to 6.5mg.

Good morning Casia,

I am recovering from major pelvic surgery Dec. 23 with a 6-8 week recovery. I have had PMR 27 months and am on 6.5 mg Prednisone. Other than a medium flare of my Fibromyalgia which has always been normal for me with anesthesia and surgery, no PMR issues. Good luck.

I was on 5mg for my hip surgery. The hospital said I had a flare as my CRP went up to 415, but I actually felt fine, it meant I had to stay in hospital a couple of extra days which was boring. I do tend to have very high blood markers all the time though. I went up to 10mg after the op.

Gosh piglette, Im glad you felt ok as that sounds a bit scary but glad the hospital was on top of it. I will certainly make sure the anaesthetist is fully aware of my condition. Take care!

I have had two hip replacements while on Prednisone. Didn't have a problem with either of them.
