I still am having trouble getting the hang of the messages.

I go to messages. It says write on the top r/h of the page. I type the name and then it disappears after I see notifications

If you know who you want to send a message to click on their name in a post to go to their profile page - click on the message box. Then you get a post box addressed to them without you having to do anything and you just write a post.

Really not clear what you mean though - when you start to type the name it offers you a list of possible options and when you choose on it appears on the next line. And you go one box down to write a post.
