Blurry eye

I have upped my prednisolone from 6mg to 9 mg for the last 6 days. This morning I noticed the vision in my left eye was quite blurry. This started about 2 hours after taking my dose at 8a.m. And it started clearing about 6 p.m. Do you think it could be due to the higher dose of prednisolone.

Thanks

Jane

Could be. It does things to the muscles in the eye too. Have you had your eyes tested recently? The fact that it comes 2 hours after Pred and wears off is suspicious. My GCA eye problems weren’t blurriness it was more like not seeing like no signal getting through.

Unfortunately I have macular oedema in my other eye so have them checked every month. Yesterday was the first to me it happened and it seems to have recovered now

Could well be. Pred can cause vision problems, but strange you didn’t get it earlier

on higher doses. Just monitor it, and obviously speak up doctor if you are concerned, or it gets any worse.

Have you had your eye pressures checked at all? The fact that you were down to 6mg implies that if you did have any steroid induced glaucoma that would have resolved on the lower doses. Just wondering if increasing to 9 might have had an effect in you?

I had steroid induced raised pressures but no visual disturbances when on initial doses but they dropped back to normal as my pred dose got down to 8mg and below. I'm probably wrong but I'm trying to eliminate possible causes in your case.

Thanks. I am seeing an opthamologist every month and my eye pressures are checked regularly. I do have high pressure but I also have thick corneas and this makes it look higher. My last pressure test showed it to be normal. I will be back at the eye clinic on Wednesday so will talk to them there then.

I suppose it could be but I'd be surprised at that low a dose. It may have been a one-off - see if it comes back.

Yes I do I really think you should see an optician. Prednisolone can affect the eye in many ways to the point of permanent damage. So please get assessed and try a lower dose if at all possible. Easier said than done, just get it checked as soon as you can. Xx

I have dropped my dose so hoping it doesn't happen again

I would get your eyes checked as a precaution for the future and as a baseline for any potential problems that may occur with long term steroid use. Thinking of you.xx

I saw an opthamologist shortly after this post who said I had blepharitis and also macular oedema in that eye. I know the eye was very sticky and the blur rinses may have been to do with that. I have been given antibiotic eye drops. My diabetic macular oedema, she says, is getting worse due to sugar spikes from the steroids. I am not sure what I should do.

Are you in the uk. Are you being treated for the macular oedema. You can have ” lucentis “ injections to help control this. It is probably the oedema that is making your vision blurred. You really should follow this up it is important. Take care, thinking of you xx

Yes I am in uk. I have treatment for my macular oedema every 4 weeks with a Lucentis injection. It couldn't be done a couple of weeks ago because of the blepharitis but going on Wednesday and hopefully it will be done then. My left eye will be treated with laser as it does not meet the criteria for an injection apparently.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Good at least they are monitoring you. Hopefully you will get your next injection. Take care xx

Hi Jane

When l was on high doses of Pred, 20mg l had a lot of trouble with my vision, mainly middle distance, so my Optician made me a pair of middle distance frames & l wore them in the house most of the time.

I’m short sighted anyway but my distant vision wasn’t affected.

Interesting - I'm pretty short-sighted that's what I find too. And I see best with my sunglasses...

in reply to PMRpro

I couldn’t see to iron (ha!ha!) as if! It was quite weird but the middle distance specs helped enormously! 👓

Good excuse!!! I can see to do that without specs at all (just) so no way out. I just ignore it until I have to wear something...

I have very old middle-distance specs and really could do with new ones but the optician I go to here didn't get it right. My guy in Scotland was fantastic but he's semi-retired now and a LONG way away.

Good Opticians particularly Dispensing Opticians are few & far between, we’re keeping ours up in Chester, traditional family practice. 👓

The trouble here is that they only test and dispense glasses - you have to go to the hospital for everything else and there is a 6 month waiting list for non-urgent.

Could be the pred as it's a quick reduction you've done - then could be fatigue but would certainly mention it at your next check up.

Just got back from the eye clinic. I went for my monthly eye injection for macular oedema but the opthamologist said it couldn't be done as I now have blepharitis and has given me antibiotic eye drops. This is probably why I was a bit blurry and also had a sore eye. She said that blepharitis is related to PMR
