Hi ,Does any one have a mouth and throat irritation with Methotrexate ,I have the feeling of a sore throat and mouth my tongue is sore too tiny little cuts or scratches on my upper pallet ,lips are irritated and teeth although I know it must be gums ,but it does feel like teeth ;-).I don't actually have a sore throat .I went to the GP with it and she gave me anti histamines .They are having no effect .I am wondering if it has something to do with the Methoxotrate. It does have the allergy feeling though .

Hi Patricia
Do you have a Rheumatology Team Help Line, usually run by the Rheumatology Nurses, if so give them a ring as they’ll be more experienced.
Have you checked your leaflet & are you drinking a full glass of water when you take them?
MrsN
Nope no drinking a glass other than the water I take them with ,I will read the leaflet again fully .I tend not to take things in as I used to .Thanks
Definitely a full glass of water & are you taking the Folic Acid 5mg?
Yes I have the folic acid 5 MG 2 days later Methotrexate Monday Folic acid Wednesday
I used to take it on the other 6days x 5mg
Different Consultants have different Regimes.
I've been taking methotrexate since December 2017 and haven't had the symptoms you describe, although I occasionally have mild sensitivity in some of my teeth - not too bothersome. However I've been told that this is one of the many side effects of taking pred.
Are they mouth ulcers as well? One side effect of mtx is a sore mouth and even mouth ulcers. That is part of the reason folic acid is given together with mtx. Many rheumies say 1x5mg a week the day after the mtx but that may not be enough and some patients need up to 5mg daily except the mtx day.
Not really just tine cuts like a crisp has scratched your mouth ,I think I will ring the Rheumatologist and see if they will see me at the clinic .They are quite good .Thanks
They may not need to see you, just offer advice over the phone.
If patients have trouble taking it orally you can self inject.
Hi Patricia, I recently had the same symptoms as you, including really sore lips, but I’m not on Methoxotrate. I assumed it might be oral thrush, and used Oraldene (an antifungal, antibacterial mouthwash) 3 times a day for a week, which has cleared it up. I don’t know if it’s a side effect of taking Pred, but the Oraldene has worked. If you’re in the UK, I ordered it online from Boots.
I rinse with salt water twice a day. It worked perfectly. Also like Mrs Nails told me drink lots of water on methotrexate day !
I will do that. Thanks..
