Sore mouth and toothpaste

There have been a couple of posts about sore mouth in the last month or so, so I would like to offer this:

I've had so-called Burning Mouth Syndrome for some years, which has fluctuated, particularly with pred. The dentist says it nearly always turns out to be an allergy, but I couldn't track it down. I always suspected toothpaste, and have tried lots of different brands with little success, though the ones without SLS did seem a a bit better.

However, the last month I have been using 'Dr Organic' and the burning has gone! Slight downsides are that it has a stupid name, and only 1000 ppm fluoride instead of the usual 1400ppm. In some of the 5 flavours I think it has none.

I hope this might help someone!

Only good thing about me is my teeth!....nothing done since 80's, someone told me years ago don't have toothpaste with SLS (or shampoo)...in, I have Aloedent toothpaste, which also doesn't have fluoride in....I have been asked over the years by dentists what toothpaste I use.....they are speechless when I tell them....wouldn't touch what my OH use if I was forced....it's the usual which all dentists try to push!...

Thanks Longtimer I will give it a try. What are the benefits of fluoride free ? Or rather why do you think it’s not a good idea to have added fluoride ?

because not everyone needs it. And if you have too much fluoride it also isn't good for you teeth. It can turn them brown!

I have suffered with this for a few years and it’s very painful, I was prescribed some medication for it, I can’t remember the name and it did ease off, for a few months and then it would return and I would have to have the medication again. I am now going to try the toothpaste you have mentioned and hopefully it will be good for me as it has been for you, so thank you for that and I will let you know if it works, fingers crossed 🤞

I too was mystified by my burning mouth and tongue. I tried A mouth rinse I made with the sachets from a nasal sinus rinse and it cleared it up almost immediately . The sachets have salt and sodium bicarbonate. I exclusively use toothpaste with fluoride. I always thought the teeth discoloration from fluoride was from Fluoride taken internally or maybe excessive use of fluoride mouth rinses. With fluoride toothpaste it’s rinsed out right away.

"With fluoride toothpaste it’s rinsed out right away"

which rather negates the point! With any of those sort of toothpaste you shouldn't rinse too thoroughly, needs to spend some time on the teeth for best results.

True, but the dose is lower.

While searching for alternative athletes foot remedies online I read that most toothpastes are anti fungal, antiseptic and antibacterial so no wonder they irritate our mouths.I won’t be putting it in my feet either 😆

SLS and surfactants generally cause chemical burns to my skin. I have to avoid contact with all of them which is difficult and expensive as SLS free products usually cost more :(

My sis in law has Burning mouth syndrome, it sounds horrible to live with. Over the last 8 years she's tried all sorts from the GP. Amytriptaline helped a bit she said, and HRT but she abandoned both for different reasons. When I thought I had Sjogrens Syndrome a few years ago I switched to non-SLS toothpastes for dry mouths like Oralieve and have generally stuck with them. Thanks for sharing

I was diagnosed with Oral Lichen Planus in 2016, an autoimmune condition that was a precursor to GCA, diagnosed early July 22. I tried many toothpastes for this painful condition. Biotene toothpaste and Biotene dry mouthwash were my saviours. The OLP is well controlled with avoiding dietary triggers and I have since introduced Sensodyne Pro enamel toothpaste once a day on the advice of my dentist. I wish the GCA could behave itself and be well controlled as quickly, although looking back, the diagnosis and treatment of OLP was a tortuous journey over a year.

Has your dentist suggested what to use in the new range of Sensodyne? Which replaces Pronamel? I've used it for years but it is no longer available here and it isn't clear to me which replaces it - all the labelling is in Italian which I don't speak well enough to suss out the details (I live in a German speaking area and speak it fluently)

She didn’t suggest which one. You can get Sensodyne Pronamel Enamel Care from the Boots website and Amazon. The last time I bought it in Boots I was struck by the wide range of choice. I hadn’t realised they’d introduced a wider range. Biotene I have to buy online as Boots stopped selling it.

Our pharmacy had it until recently but it is no longer listed. I don't "do" Amazon - not least because to get this toothpaste would be double the price once shipping to Italy is included! It's good, it isn't that good.

Post Brexit any shipping to/from Europe has become a nightmare. I guess that might be the same if you tried to buy it from Boots online.

Probably!!! I am finally about to lose my phone number - which I have had since I got my first mobile phone in the early 90s! Now it must be used in the UK between every 90 days over here, Just hoping I can use my Italian phone for getting PIN codes though Amazon uses emails too and the bank uses card readers. Not sure what else I will have to change - it has been my contact number for everything UK-based for nearly 30 years. I am not amused. I'm just about to get an electronic/biometric residence permit - not necessary here but Germany was getting iffy about paper documentation so I'd best be safe before travelling there,
